The article I read isn’t very detailed but the police were there for an hour before he was tasered which seems odd. If he’d approached them then presumably he wouldn’t have been able to fall from the balcony. Not really the point and it won’t bring this poor guy back but there should be specialists for talking people out of suicide threats. The police aren’t suitable for this IMO.
No, I agree with you both to some extent as there are holes in the story I can’t fill in. Obviously they didn’t rush him but then I don’t see how he could have attacked them either to justify the tasering.
What matters is, he was suicidal, on a balcony, the police tasered him causing him to fall to his death and the officers are being investigated for manslaughter. How fast they ran up to his flat is not material, and you're only raising it because your son is in the Met.
They called for a specialist. In the hour they waited for him to turn up, the situation escalated thus needing them to have to break into the premises to approach the guy. Without further evidence, you can only assume he's come at them, thus requiring the deployment of a Taser....bodycams will sort it all out, as currently no-one has been charged, only investigated. However, to say they rushed into the flat and then tasered the guy is stretching the truth a little thin.
That's fair, but I didn't say they rushed him. I said they rushed up to his flat, because he was threatening to jump, and their job was to try and save his life. They end up tasering, apparently causing him to fall to his death. That's the current situation.

Jeez, the comma between flat and because, divides what I said and why I said it. In other words, the reason I said they rushed, was because this guy was presumably hanging off a balcony. If you prefer to say they took their time, that's up to you.
Doesn't sound rushed, sounds organised. We have no way of knowing what occured on the balcony to cause the officer to draw, and then fire his taser. If memory serves me well, pretty sure they have to shout a warning that they are going to fire unless there is a direct threat... The IOPC said that at around 2am on 12 April officers forced their way into the flat and “tried to persuade the man to come inside from the balcony and requested that a police negotiator attend the scene”. Evidence at this stage indicates that an officer discharged their Taser, shortly before the man fell from the balcony railing at around 3.20am. The man fell five floors to the ground and was transported to hospital with critical injuries. He sadly died later that day.” The IOPC said the police negotiator arrived just before the man fell but had not entered the flat
Both officers involved have been handed gross misconduct notices in addition to being investigated for manslaughter. Of course, the law regards them as innocent unless and until proven guilty.
