Just watched on YouTube highlights of us away to Plymouth 88/89 season. We won but the football was dire. Today's team would wipe the floor with them (same league)
But I've seen 70s games on YouTube and there was a better style then than the 80s.
I admit it...I'm bored on my day off!

Oh no, one of my fav subjects. Footy across my eras. Impossible to say which era would beat which, as progress is evident in nutrition, fitness cardio etc, training, equipment. The list goes on.

What I love doing though is comparing players. 80s had some players that would be still be the best in the modern era. Maradona, Platini, Socrates, Falcao, Zico, Baresi, Mattheus, Boniek, Hoddle, Shilton, Robson, Junior, Gullit, Van Basten. Etc etc. It was, for me a golden era of football. I reckon I could pick a best of 80s to beat best of 20s.

I know I have drifted into international stuff, not domestic. But man we had some great domestic football side. Liverpool with Hansen, Barnes, Rush, Whelan, Lawrenson, Aldridge, Dalgleish. Klopp would pick all of them now.

All well and said...but I just watched Plymouth Sundland <laugh>

The 80s was when I started watching football. FA Cup final 1981 and then the World Cup in 1982. My first lads game at Roker in 1983. Just started putting a bit of absolute 80s on in the house as well. I've been feeling nostalgic recently as well.

Love Pascoe me. Better than Clarke <laugh>

Was Whitehurst in that side or not? Crap memory. Would love to see Billy protecting some of these young lads
He wasn't here long mind Billy. He wasn't long anywhere apart from Hull!

George Best at his peak would walk into any of the top teams in Europe today
Only caught the end of him, but what a player. An era when natural talent was valued above all else. We became obsessed with big quick physical players for a time, and sadly to an extent I still see those values rewarded more than they should be. Give me a player with a quick brain over a quick runner any day of the week.
