Activity can include being signed in / or viewing / or giving likes - no likes are registered on his profile, but I don't know what length of inacitvity creates that scenario.
To cut along explanation short, when an account is viewing, does not mean the person is medically able to be active. Sadly that's life, until they post again we quite simply don't know.
So in answer to your question about him being in the shadows, I cannot know the reason for that.
