Haven't seen it mentioned, but according to nufcblog, Danny Guthrie is close to signing a new contract.

Never thought I'd say this, but I would be very happy with this. A good player who is a good deputy for Tiote and Cabaye. I have always been his biggest critic, but recently I have been over the moon with his performances and I hope his form will continue!

I've always liked him and think it's good for us and him if he signs :)

It was in the Chronicle to, how true it is, we'll find out soon. However, CWarr said Colo and Guthrie have signed deals, so if they don't, you know who to kill.

Doubt they have signed them as we would know for certain lol.

Would be in a very good mood if Colo signed a deal especially! :)

Danny was just a little cagey when asked about getting a possible new deal today:

Don't blame him, he wants to play every game and not just when a player gets injured

He must know that once Tiote and Cabaye are both fit and ready then he's straight on to the bench.

This. For example if he went to a team like Swansea and Norwich he's bound to be a regular. <ok>

But at the same time what would you prefer? The possibility of playing European football next year and being 3rd choice but playing all the Europa league games, Fa and Carling cup games and a couple of EPL starts.. or would you go to Swansea/Norwich to be a regular starter but without Europe and mid-table mediocrity?

His taken his chances well so far and am now less worried if one of Cabaye or Tiote is out. Still 3rd choice, obviously, but looks good cover.

Hes not as good or as sexy as Cabaye and most likely never will be.

I have faith in him to come in and do a job when called upon but I worry that if he starts to shine too much that Fat Mike will flog Cabaye when a big money offer comes in and stick with Guthrie who will be on lower wages.

A negative way to look at things I know but there you go.

Sorry for being a bit cynical but he has only played 3 games this season. Hardly deserving of a new contract imo. Easy to see why Shola got a new 3 year deal if that is the requirement for a new contract. He is alright but does this mean he will get in the way of abeid, Gosling and vuckic's development? I certainly hope not.

Must admit I'd have waited to see him earn it. I'm not his biggest fan and although he impressed against Stoke and did ok against Everton, I'd like to see him do it over a long period. Of course he is inexpensive I'd imagine and they may not wish to lose any fee for him. I'm surprised if he has signed because he left his last two clubs due to lack of action and he has no hope of breaking up Tiote/Cabaye. Worried by Man U's interest in Cabaye, impossible to turn down

Did you see him last season then? Again.. Chelsea(at home), Man United(at home), Tottenham(at home).. he was our MOTM in them games. <ok>

Tell me.. go on apart from the top ''six'' who has a better 3rd choice CM than Danny Guthrie? It certainly anit Stoke.. <whistle>

I doubt any of them are really ready to step up at the moment. We need CM cover

Great news imo, we need to build a strong squad and he certainly does that.

IF we can get into Europe next season we'll need to see a lot more rotation and he could end up playing a lot of games even when others are fit. He's still reasonably young himself and plays a completely different position to Vuckic. I honestly can't see Vuckic making the grade, I know he has talent but where does he play? He is a complete luxury player. Like when Taarabt came through at Spurs. As for Abeid, he is part of our squad and still young, Gosling hasn't set the world alight and if we were to keep one of him and Guthrie, it's Guthrie every time.

I can imagine that he is thinking 'well I know I will probably never get to play for a club like Newcastle again, but then I want to play first team football which would mean signing for a lesser club'

    Hard decisions for him.

Also, we are offering him a new contract because he would be leaving on a free at the end of the season and we would have to fork out money for someone who probably isn't as good as him

Have you actually seen Vuckic play that much? I wouldn't call him a luxury player at all. He works quite hard and can tackle quite well for an attacking midfielder.

You rate him highly, I don't, simple as that really. You always pick three games but I would suggest he has been around for a long time here and for me you can count his good games on two hands. That is not good enough. Hopefully he has turned a corner, can keep the weight off and kick on. I just prefer to wait to see him actually do it. For every game you mention I could drag up a game where he was ****e or non existent, or when petty free kicks have put us under pressure leading to goals. I want him to do well as he is playing for my club but he hasn't done it for me.

He had more than 10 good games in the Championship season alone.
