Ultimately the last few years have shown that you can’t buy a winning mentality just by buying a manager. Spurs have tried twice now with Mourinho and Conte and it’s not working. That mentality doesn’t have to come with dour football but that’s been how we’ve attempted to do it, and that, along with continuing to squeeze the last vestiges of life out of what remains of the Pochettino era, surely have to end with this season and, surely, Conte and likely a few of the players’ times at Spurs.
Part of the frustration is the mental approach to games. These players can play high tempo football and with a couple of additions in midfield it might even be effective. But to some out so slow and contained, so much of the time, is just awful.
It surely has to be time to move for a coach who is going to play a more high tempo, progressive, dare I say modern style of play, and just see how it goes. Sometimes you develop that steel from within, with the addition of an experienced head or two along the way. Sure, you’ll chuck a few ties like Juventus away, but you also get the Amsterdams. With the right man and the ability to keep the back room and playing staff fresh along the way, it’s doable to break the ceiling and win. But the quick fix is no longer going to work at Spurs and we have to be done flogging a dead horse.
