The baseball games are v good
Last time there we did a helicopter ride over the city - brilliant
Manhattan Bridge is good to say youve been across it
Go to an authentic Irish Bar
    Anti-Establishment Cafe is funny
The bus tour 8open top) was quite worth it

Been going to New York for many years for trade shows etc.
A lot of what you need to do has already been covered.
Walking/Taxi is the way to go depending on your timescale.
On the corner of 52nd street and 7th avenue there is an Irish Bar Rosie O'Grady's...great place.
In this area short walk to Times Square, Central Park, Rockerfeller Center, Radio City.....5th Avenue...Tiffany's.
Statue of Liberty and on and on.
You will not be short of things to do.....very interesting place to say the least.
Hope you have a wonderful time mate :)

Looks like I’m heading there too, just got tickets to see Peter Gabriel at Madison Square Garden in September. Always love a trip to NYC. It’s been a while!

Definitely do the Big Bus Tour, 3 different routes. We did the bus tour at night, coming across the Brooklyn Bridge and seeing Manhattan lit up is a must. I preferred the top of the rock at Rockefeller centre to the Empire state view. The Twin Towers museum also. We've always bought the New York Pass b4 going and saves you a fortune if you're there long enough. For food we always fit in a visit to Tony's Italian just off Times Square. The portions are huge so just get one and share it!!

This is definitely on my to do list, but the wife has a terminal illness so it'll be in the distant future. I'd love to take my teenage daughter - how long a stay would people recommend?

I can highly recommend Besos Tapas bar on Staten island , just off exit from the ferry, up to the buss concourse and to the right, over the road past the municipal court 50/100 yards , left up the bank 25 yards on the right. On google maps. Ferry is free, a great view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis island and Manhattan on the way (all for free )back especially at night. the rest I'd book up before hand, One world Trade, Rockafella centre etc.. Museums on the day, just turn up. Central Park.
Top dining River Café on the Hudson under Brooklyn bridge on the Brooklyn side. Expensive but top notch. Breakfast, any diner really. Taxis, for get them as its nearly gridlocked now but the subway pass is excellent value.

Sorry to hear about your Mrs marra, prayers for her and you and your family.

We stayed 3 nights, push that to 1 or 2 more, but as Red says, it's tiring.

Ah so sorry to hear that mate, we have booked for 4 nights, I’ve been told you’d find it impossible to fit everything into one trip, it’s the type of place you need to do a few times, which I am fine with haha

I found it to be the most polite place I've ever visited. I was expecting the complete opposite. Not a single iffy interaction.

I reckon they have a big meeting at the end of November and decide they have to be on their best behaviour for Christmas.
