"There has to have been someone out there in the footballing world"... No, there really really doesn't. it absolutely blows my mind how easy some people on here seem to think it is to find a decent, Championship-level striker. Let alone sign one in January.

Honestly, do people think Speakman can just pop onto LinkedIn and there'll be a queue of strikers good enough to play in one of the most compeitive leagues in the world, just sat at home twiddling their thumbs?
I remember BSA saying the January window is the toughest, there is rarely any talent available. BSA hit lucky and we stayed up. Speakman tried for 4 or 5 but got none. The real problem was the summer window when we failed to get 2 new strikers, only securing Simms on loan. I believe the club are being run professionally and I'm enjoying the football, Saturday was embarrassing and hopefully just a blip. However pressure on Mogga to use the squad better than the last few games. I posted I'd be happy with 10th, that's now looking a challenge but at least we are safe.

Hhhaaawwwwaaaaayyyyyyy the lads.

Go on then, I'll bite this one time.

Firstly, Hello there. You strategically missed out the part just before you quoted me taking my words and making them out of context where I said "I'm not for one second saying we should've went out and blew x amount on just anyone".

Secondly, do you actually think I believe championship level players sit at home twiddling their thumbs waiting for Sunderland to come calling?

Thirdly, Speakman did try hence me saying what I said, we bid for players, we tried hence me saying "There must be someone out there", ie will to take us up on an offer, you know, a throw away comment.

Sorry, my post wasn't specifically aimed at you, your post just happened to be the one I saw saying that the club should have signed a striker. I was really just addressing the idea that there must have been someone out there we could sign, as it's a sentiment I've seen posted on here quite a bit. My point was simply that there wasn't anyone out there. We clearly tried for a few and either the clubs or players turned us down. I'm not sure what more the club were supposed to do if there were no other viable options available?

I was talking to a fella involved with agents a few days ago. He said the last 2 days of the window were a nightmare with loads of deals pencilled in that for reasons never happened. Nowt specific about us. He said people were tearing their hair out over last minute changes. I suppose every Jan is like that, I dont know but am guessing. I suppose we have our own history of disastrous deadline strikers in Jan, with Grigg and Defoe being abject failures. At least we havent wasted money like we did on those 2 I suppose...

No bother mate. Conversation is good. From what Speakman was saying, we were in for a few but no cigar. Personally I'm glad the days of "Sign anyone available" are gone. Overpay, don't want to be here and just take the money that in the end bit us on the arse. We find ourselves in a unique position.

Good post mate. Signing players that cant fit has to be in our past. Defoe has to be the case study our recruitment team follow. I have seen Chris Martin mentioned. In my opinion he would have been as ineffective as Defoe. I can honestly not find a free agent worth a spot. Therefore if clubs say no deal not sure what else we do. Signing any old striker is not where we are at anymore. Maybe an u21 lad gets a chance, sooner that than the Chris Martins of this world for me.

Can you imagine the fallout from the fans on here if we signed the garbage players that some of them want
