I blame Therese Coffey for this. Once turnips were seen as palatable it was only a matter of time before tree rats were on the menu.

Mind you, the Somerset locals were probably doing it already. I believe there are one or two oddballs in that county.

It seems that UK supermarkets were warned in January, by a major supplier of several supermarket chains, that there would be a shortage of fresh produce, including tomatoes, and if they wanted to secure a supply of what would be available, it would cost more.
The supplier has claimed that supermarkets refused to pay the price asked, but at least one of them has now contacted him and offered to pay the price they said they couldn’t afford to pay last week.
The weather factor involved was a warmer than usual November/December, leading to produce maturing sooner than expected and needing to be picked.
This was followed by a colder than usual January meaning that the next batch of produce hasn’t matured as soon as it would normally, leaving a gap in supplies, causing a shortage.
Having said that, European supermarkets must have paid the going rate as there doesn’t appear to be any shortage across Europe.

I don't know what others have found but, except for tomatoes, there was plenty of fresh veg available the other day. I didn't check the turnip counter though. Quite often these stories whip up a frenzy of unnecessary panic buying. If I understood it correctly what Therese Coffey said wasn't such a big deal and was trying to encourage people to eat home grown produce. But the media should have made more about her comments that people should just work more hours without knowing if that was possible or what hours they were already working and still struggling. It's those kind of comments that alienate the general public from politicians rather than eating turnips.

    Supermarkets are ****ing arseholes.

One of the biggest hills I will die on is that farmers need more protection against greedy corporations & pointless government legislation.

Food shortages have been absolutely inevitable for a long time and will only get worse in the coming years.

If anyone hasn’t seen Clarkson’s Farm, it gives a great insight.

With the government targeting social landlords, to improve their housing, I am still to see anything that says private landlords will be held to the same standards.
A couple of cases, in this video, of how tenants are being illegally coerced into quitting a property.

Godwin's law states that the longer an online debate goes on the Hitler comparison becomes more likely.. Which is what happened here.

I never said in any capacity:

"Any comparisons to Hitler are invalid"

There is no point in engaging if you are going to misquote me entirely and use a straw man argument..

There are of course obvious comparisons to be made, both took over weakened super powers and quickly silenced critics and opposition whilst forming mafia states.

But Hitler took huge amounts of Europe within a few years of starting his expansionist intentions, which he commenced roughly 5 years in to his tenure. Putin by comparison can't even successfully annex lands he believed to be indefensible due to a lack of geographic features, one of the core reasons I believe wants Russia's border up to the Dnieper.

While there may be some comparisons, there is plenty of differences too. The timescales involved for starters, Hitler was far more successful at invasions and Putin is only seemingly interested in areas he perceives to be formerly Russian, not that this is in any way acceptable..

This tells a tale of neglect on a major scale. 79 pensioners died, per day in England in 2020/21, whilst waiting for social care. Lack of central funding being stated as the reason.

Almost 29,000 pensioners died waiting for social care last year.

Cash-strapped local councils are approvingless care support, meaning more people pass away before they can get help.

Analysis of NHS Digital data shows 28,890 people over the age of 65 died waiting for care in England in 2020/21 – 79 a day.

Age UK found that 28% of those who asked for a social care assessment had to wait at least six months.

The charity’s Caroline Abrahams said: “We fear there are tragedies playing out behind closed doors.”

Of course there's been collusion with the right wing press. The Telegraph, Mail, Express, Sun and Standard and more. It doesn't make the vaccine any less effective in saving millions of lives worldwide or the lies and misinformation regarding brexshit true.

So a government minister asks the papers to help him promote a life-saving vaccine and you think that is collusion? I don’t understand your point. Unless you are one of these with no understanding of what a vaccine is?

Collusion would be: I need a favour. The vaccines don’t work but I need the people to believe in them. Can you splash something reassuring?

27 Category 1 emergency patients, and a further 281 category 2, having to get taxis to A&E as a result of ambulance shortages, in just one district.
Shameful and a result of years of Tory policies.

A Crippling Lack Of Ambulances Has Seen Hundreds Of Desperately Ill Patients Rushed To Hospital By Taxi At A Cost Of £129,000

    News Reporter

A CRIPPLING lack of ambulances has seen hundreds of desperately ill patients rushed to hospital by TAXI at a cost of £129,000.

One scandal-hit service ferried 27 critical condition patients by cab. Each was on a category 1 call – needing life-saving intervention or resuscitation.

A further 281 taxi rides were used for category 2 patients – with conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, sepsis or burns.

The cases, from last April to November, were in the East of England – the country’s worst-performing ambulance service.

Paramedic Glenn Carrington, Unison’s regional chair, said: “These are patients who without medical help will die and they are being thrown in the back of a taxi.

“It is like something out of a dystopian movie, but that is how bad things have got. There’s no slack in the system. It is broken.”

A Freedom of Information request revealed the £129,100 bill is a massive rise on the £35,180 spent during 2021-22.

Peterborough-based Glenn, 58, said taxis were used because 999 crews were stuck in queues at overcrowded A&E departments.

He added: “A clinician will ring a patient and say: ‘Can you get into a taxi? And they will say: ‘Yes, I’m having a heart attack, but I can climb into a taxi’. They go to A&E, the driver drops them, puts them in a wheelchair and hopefully a nurse will come.

“But what happens if they deteriorate in a taxi? We do this job because we care. We help people. And when we can’t do that there’s nothing more soul destroying and that’s why people are leaving.”

The target ambulance response time for category 1 calls is seven minutes.

Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting blamed the taxi scandal on years of Tory failure. He said: “What does it say about the state of our NHS under the Conservatives?”

Unison’s head of health Sara Gorton added: “The Government has to deal with the NHS staffing emergency. That means improving wages to stop people leaving for better paid, less stressful work.”

But most strike action planned for this week has been suspended after the Government agreed to pay talks.

Ambulance staff numbers in England are down from 20,532 to 18,536 in five years.

Glenn says some burnt-out colleagues even quit to become Tesco shelf stackers.

The East of England Ambulance Service said: “A decision to use a taxi is made once deemed safe and appropriate by a clinician and consent is gained by the patient – including, on some occasions, after an assessment by a paramedic on scene. An ambulance is always sent if there is any question about the suitability of a taxi.”

A Care Quality Commission report last year found some patients were forced to wait more than 12 hours for an ambulance.

The service, covering Cambridgeshire, Essex, East Anglia, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, has been in “special measures” since October 2020.

In 2019 an independent investigation was launched after the suspected suicides of three male staff in 11 days. A report criticised working culture and said bosses needed to help staff with mental health.

Clarkson can be a massive twat, let's be honest, but that show has done so much good for farming in general in this country. Fair play to him.

So the January 6th “insurrection” was a fake too.

Video evidence proves that thePolice literally let them in and guided them around the building.. interesting.

Os do you simply not question anything that agrees with your personal opinion? Rhetorical question as the answer is quite clear (and has been proven again and again and again)

The leap of logic it takes to go from this video to the whole thing being fake is quite mind blowing.

Time to stop outgoing PMs from having a Resignation Honours List, unless of course people are happy with Johnson giving his dad a knighthood.
And we still have to see who Liz Truss names in her Resignation Honours List.
Johnson’s list is said to number 100, mainly cronies and Tory donors.
Cameron and May nominated 122, between them.
Blair and Brown nominated 0, zero, zilch, nada between them.
