every time someone attempts a shot, the position of the ball, the goalkeeper and defenders are taken into account to calculate how likely the shot is to result in a goal

say Sakalas "open goal" on Sunday was assigned 0.2 xG, that means you would expect a goal to be scored 1 in 5 times from that position

all the shots from each team are added up to create the final xG score, it tells you more information than the final score

almost every professional club will be using it to assess their performance

I only worked out it was accumulative last week <laugh>

Thought it was divided by something and couldn't work it out.

Nobody ever explains it well enough.
