I no longer trust Commoli or KK with the money. Martin Jol spoke of Commoli's attributes near the start of the season, mocking tha players he brought into Tottenham- Assou-Ekotto etc and Jol claimed he himself saw the potential in Gareth Bale and was the man to bring him into the club. WHen this was released i overlooked the comments as i believed them to be fairly petty remarks by Martin Jol, but can't help but think he maybe speaking the truth. Just think who we could have bought with the amount spent on Carroll, Henderson and Downing? Mario Gomez would have been a class signing in the Striker position (he can actually finish and would have cost less thean £35 MILLION POUNDS), Corzola would have been a great signing- he moved to Malaga in the summer for 21 million euros and scores much more frequently than Downing and is also ambidextrous so would have actually been good on the right wing too. Lets say we spent 16 million on Henderson (no one really knows the sum of money) and add on the extra 10 million pounds savings from the Carroll and Downing transfers and we would have £26 million pounds to spend- that sort of cash would buy Hamsik, possibly even Ganso or Hazard. Am i speaking to soon? Hopefully. Am i too optimistic upon the talent which liverpool could actually bring in considering our lack of champions league football? Possibly But the players we have bought just don't seem good enough
We wouldnt have got those players in with no european football. We need to give them a little more time (frustrating that it is)
You appear to forget that we are on a programme of long term improvement. It will not happen overnight. All you appear to want KK and DC to do is go out and buy names in an attempt to achieve immediate sucess. If it worked then fine, However, even if it did for a season or two then you are left with having to go through exactly the same exercise again at a probably increased cost. I truly believe that we have bought players who can/will be with us for 5 years and maybe even longer. Add to that the youngsters who are on the verge of breaking through. Add to that the total change of philosophy within the club. We no longer have a first 11 and a few spares - what we do have is the beginings of a true first team squad that is inter-changable without loss of quality. So, the pieces are not yet truly knitted together. But we are playing attractive football, creating chances galore and still relatively comfortable at the back. Give it time.
Cazorla and Mata would have both signed.Hazard n Goetze both wanted a dabble with there parent club in the CL
JOHN HENRY said it would be a disaster if LFC does not get champion's league position THIS season. all that long term improvement talk contradicts the major investor's aspiration. what worries me is that some of the better players may not be patient to wait that long for CL and PL trophies.
Carrol was a bad panic splurge. But Suarez is good. Henderson has potential. Does the club use Moneyball stats to buy players?
Can see both sides TBH. I accept that the players we've bought bi-in-large have been ineffective (Carroll, Downing, Henderson) But they're all tied into 5 year contracts and who's to say that Carroll and Henderson will not come good in a year or two (still being realtively young) and excel in a team in which they are fully embedded into. Conversely, it seems slightly a risky strategy when there is such a high importance on getting CL this year - I think with that in mind we can't be too lavish with paying 20+ million for a player just because of potential when we need players to be effective from day 1 (like Suarez). I think tactically the KK and SC team is quite solid so I'm ok there but in terms of transfer policy I'm unsure about how Comoli and Dalglish have gone about their business over the summer. But hey, I'd love to be proved wrong.
Oh you know that for a fact do you? The only one actually playing in the Premiership is Mata. Although he's had a good start we still need to see if he will last the pace. When he had the opportunity to 'shine' in the friendly, he didn't really take it with both hands did he? As for Carzola, Hazard and Goetze. They appear to be good players in their present sides. That doesn't mean that they will automatically make the grade in the Premiership. You can look very good in a team that plays around you but what happens when you have to adapt to another style, at a different pace? Across the Premiership there are many Euro players who came with big reputations only to slip into mediocraty or obscuracy when faced with the change. You really have to look much further than the stats when making such a decision.
i completly disagree with the author of this thread and the fact that naija who is patently a wum is on here kind of proves the point. "right" and "wrong" this far into a process is ridiculous. point 1. point 2.... time to get real, yes mata would be nice but he would not be interested, who the hell can say if his agent was approached or not! think about it. We get downing cos he's interested so if you look at City embaressing themselves chasing kaka for 90million and ending up with a bunch of fillers like johnson you will see clearly (IMO) that walking before you can run is the moral of that tale. We must buy wisely but buy players who will do the job to get us back up there where we can then get even better players to push us further. Until we are i nthe CL we are not getting aguero or mata or whomever the fools want to spout as being on if only..... honestly.... it was villa and silva for years upon years on 606... don't people get they were not interested!
There are players for the future and then the now, we do need the now, I think with our academy and players such as hendo and Carroll ( probably more on the way too) they can be looked at more for long term but we do need to look at downing and the senior members on delivering as John henry did say we needed it this year. Getting CL this year opens many many more options not just for players now, but the likes of Lucas, Erikssen, Polo, etc will want to come to us.
Oh again the comedy. As Kenny ame on board it was all a five year plan, or 3 or whatever, now after a few matches the fking moaning is pissing me off. Carroll should have scored, 3 points, last time Suares should have scored and others too, we should have won 3 draws but for poor decisions by players Downing wasted a lot against Swansea and finishing and all of a sudden these mess-ups which are due to a new team gelling is ALL managements faults. If we had won 3 of those and were 6 points better off all this moaning would not be happening now would it!
Alright let's be realistic, do it over again, who would come to us? If you could say maybe not Downing for example then who? If you say a. johnson, why would city have sold him to us, a rival? Would have been good yes but not realistic.....yet. now they have Aguero nasri etc they might now do it but not then. Young we missed out on, jones we missed out on, trying to think of other Prem players that would have come. Start with the prem then we can move outward.
It's a system John Henry used to buy baseball players? You know what yanks are like; they think they know best; walk into our league and apply their ideas. Or is that unfair?
In answer to your earlier pathetic wum attempt -Henry has already said that moneyball tactics as used in baseball cannot be transferred to footie. Baseball is a statistician's wet dream where pitching accuracy, home run rates, run rates etc are tallied simply and directly gauge a player's effectiveness. A player's effectiveness isn't reflected by stats in football though all the time and it's harder to guage the overall picture of what a player is like without taking their personality etc into consideration.
Fair play. But why do Liverpool fans expound Downing's goals/assists so much; they make Downing sound like a Moneyball purchase

what goals/assists? I have no idea what you're referring too. The only stats brought up when we bought Downing were his crossing and match fitness stats which were top of the league last year and gave insight as to why we bought him (Ie crossing to Carroll). His performances and crosses this season have shown exactly why stats alone can't be relied upon.
