Disappointed not going to lie. Be ****ting a brick now everytime Gelhardt gets tackled. Feel a bit sorry for Mowbray tbh, clearly wanted replacements for Evans and Stewart but for whatever reason we couldn't sign either. Is that right we haven't signed a striker or our own for 2 years? I realise I'll get hammered by a few on here now but just a bit gutted that's all and felt like getting it off me chest. Hopefully Gelhardt stays fit.
It's definitely disappointing that we haven't been able to bring anyone in. We'll never know what the financial restraints are, but it's clear the club want Simms (who will definitely be available in the summer) and it could be that spending too much on a striker today would have prevented us getting the one we want long term in the summer. I'll be interested to hear what happened with Nemeth though, if we were actually that close in this window and if he chose Hamburg or we decided against him. A second striker on loan would have done me just fine until the summer, but maybe that's harder when you already have one who clubs think is going to start the majority of games. We'll just have to hope Gelhardt stays fit for the majority of matches now - which isn't actually that much to ask, we've been desperately unlucky with striking injuries this season.
If plays every game til the end of the season then absolutely no problem at all as he's a fantastic player. It's just the pressure and over reliance on him that makes me anxious now. Our injury record this season is ridiculous let's face it. I know we still play well when we don't have a striker but you see the difference when Simms and Stewart came back to the team as a whole. Went to bed before the window shut last night, confident that surely this time we'll bring a few bodies in.
It's definitely a misstep and there's questions over why we couldn't get another striker through the door. I'm very confident that if Everton had signed another striker, then Simms would be a Sunderland player so I don't think it's a lack of recognition that we need another striker or even that we're unwilling to spend. I do think it's perhaps a bit of idealism and rigidness from the recruitment team though, that they're so stubborn/certain that their method is correct, that they were unwilling to deviate and sign someone who didn't fit their metrics. Yesterday was perhaps a day to be a little more flexible on that front (as long as it didn't burden the club long term).
We may go on to win the FA Cup this year and if we do it will be achieved without a striker in the team. Madness.
Spot on. It's why it didn't happen last window. Too. Speakman sighting Dajaku as a third striking option.
I sympathise with the sentiments expressed here mate, but I'm kind of reassured in a way that we weren't prepared to deviate from our strategy and panic buy someone who may or may not fit. I'm disappointed that it appears as though we weren't able to pull off a plan B,C or even D,when the Everton thing stalled, but,it seems like we've set our standards and won't deviate from them, which has been a great thing for our recruitment thus far. Time will tell I suppose.
poor from sunderland last night first real disappointing day under the recruitment, looks like the banked on simms still should of had some else lined up and then if simms did get sorted bonus but last night it looked like Everton were going to sort out a deal for sarr
Yep,looks like we were waiting for the dominoes and when the first one didn't get kicked none of the others fell. Surprised we didn't have a plan B.
Or Non-recruitment in this case. Even letting Dajaku leave when down in the striking department shows he wasn’t really ever the ‘3rd striker option’ simply because he wasn’t very good in that position. Now we don’t even have a 2nd striker option. Northern league teams wouldn’t find themselves in this position for too long.
Don't see any criticism in letting Dajaku leave if they'd decided as you say. Maybe they think the lad from Lille can do it?
And there's the answer. Everton are an established PL club with a new manager, some top class players and willing to spend big on wages and transfer fees. They're even more desperate, than Sunderland, to sign a striker but couldn't. We're trying for a slightly unexpected promotion but consolidating in this league wouldn't harm us at all ... I expect it's what we budgeted for. Everton would suffer a catastrophe implosion if they're relegated so the failure to sign a striker could seriously affect the club for many years. They sold Richarlison for £60 in July so have had all that time to line up a replacement. But they've found strikers hard to find, especially mid season.when everyone has hopes of finishing the season well. We've managed to persuade relegation threatened Leeds to release a striker who's played, and scored, in the PL. With the attacking threat we have, in the team, Gelhardt should thrive if he adopts our incredible fighting spirit ... I think he's the type who will. I'm looking forward to the Millwall game and think we can win it judging from the Fulham game when we played without Stewart and could've won the game if a very good goal wasn't offside. And, to credit the club, it doesn't look like we intended to let Stewart leave ... ... something that seems to be overlooked. Whatever the case it's time to crack on with the football and forget all of this guesswork on what we shudda cudda done imo Ha’way the Lads!
It's about being a little flexible I'd say. I would have liked us to have a second or third option after Simms (maybe we did and couldn't get them either). I'm not suggesting we went for the 7th choice just to have a striker here which is why I'm not too disappointed. I think they may have got it wrong, but they've got more than enough credit in the bank for me and I still think we'll make the playoffs with this squad.
Why would you get hammered, when you’re bang on? It’s ridiculous that a 20 year old Gelhardt is our only striking option. Madness imo. We’ll soon see.
If that's true about putting our eggs into one basket then they haven't learnt from Broadhead in the summer.
If someone so much as farts near Gelhardt we're fecked. I'm disappointed we haven't brought anyone in. We felt short with two when the last window shut and then both got injured. We had two and one got injured this time but there was the opportunity to bring someone in and we haven't. They also used the Dajaku excuse in the summer and now hes not here either. We're going to see Lihadji or Bennette chucked up front aren't we?
Phew Thankfully we didn't sign a striker. I'm imagining the meltdown on here if we'd lowered our (significantly higher than previously) standards to 'just get one in' to appease those whingeing about not signing one . . . . anyone We've got a very good and exciting squad, that most have been extremely happy with, and circumstances have weakened our frontline, but we've still got a hell of a squad that will be able complete considerably better than we would have been able to a couple of years ago Perhaps some really think that S.A.F.C. didn't want to sign a no.9 during this window
Bit of a rock and a hard place though isn’t it? While we know what SAFC should have done, there’s another party in every deal, the selling /loaning club. Geld hart was brought in to fill the gap and take his place in the squad alongside Stewart (and maybe Simms) Everton’s issues with failing to get someone in has no doubt affected the Simms deal to us and we have no control over that. Also, once Stewart got injured a couple of days ago, every club knows we’ve suddenly become desperate and will no doubt try to rinse us financially. I can understand that what’s happened has a ripple effect on our planning. I think a week ago we expected to have 3 Centre forwards in the squad. I hope that there’s a free agent who can fill a gap til the end of the season but I don’t think we should leave ourselves financially hamstrung for years to come as a result of a week of bad luck.
