In a hypothetical world where the choices are either win the League Cup and be relegated, or be knocked out the league cup and stay up, which would you choose?

I am torn, but I think I'd prefer to see Saints win something. I've never seen that happen in my lifetime (other than the JPT, which isn't much to celebrate) and I think that's a more memorable achievement than looking back and thinking "what a time we had with those six seasons in a row avoiding relegation."

I think most people will probably prefer to stay up, so it would be interesting to see the results.

I appreciate that this could be completely pointless after tomorrow night's game <laugh>

Cup for me. I actually think we would have a decent shot of going straight back up if we went down so for me this is a no brainer.

I want us to win the cup AND stay up, but I think that staying up is more important.
I don’t have confidence in us returning straight away, without some really good recruitment, especially in midfield.
In terms of creativity and pace we have an awful midfield. To use a construction analogy, our midfield is full of labourers but lacks master craftsmen. Even an in form JWP is more labourer than craftsman, except for his free kicks.
Armstrong might become a good striker, at a lower level, but I think Adams would be off to another bottom half Premier League club.
Next season would also, possibly, be too soon to start the goal scoring stars from our academy so we will still have to sort out our lack of goals with decent recruitment.

    Edit.
I was there for the 76 final and also for the Man Utd and Forest League Cup finals, so I would dearly love us to take revenge on one of those clubs this season.

My favourite type of thread <diva>

Might try and find the previous threads later so we can make a comparison. The last one was 60/70% in favour of cup iirc.

Cup for me too. Would love us to win a trophy. Despite it being a tin pot trophy, the JPT final was such an amazing day out! I want more of that.

With regards to relegation... yes, not ideal, but again, our rise up through the lower leagues were amazing times. Probably my best as a Saints fan of 40 years. Fairly confident we would have a good shout of coming back up quickly too. Will be nice to win a few games again. Just need to find another Rickie!

Winning the Cup also means another European tour. <diva>

Admittedly it would be the Europa Conference League but should get some interesting places to visit!

If we were in Europe and the Championship I think we would struggle to get promoted straight away.

Anyway the most likely outcome is not on there - get relegated and win **** all

Went to the FA Cup final in 2003 and remember the bitterness of relegation the following season.

So I'd take the cup win and relegation.

Nah I think it's a good thing. I was going to start one myself if we had a good result tomorrow

I think we had one in 2018 and then 2020, like I say it'll be interesting to see how similar the results are.

If it was Fa Cup I’d say cup.

Win the cup - we will get relegated eventually, if not this season or the next, soon enough, but the chances of winning a cup are few are far between for us.

I was lucky enough to be at Wembley in 1976, my brother who has been a Saints fan since the very early 60s, couldn't get a ticket. He's dead now (2022) so he saw one major trophy win in his entire life. For a true football fan (more than me) of a reasonably long-term top-flight club that's not right.

I’d take the cup win, as I’ve said lots of times over the years, we will go down eventually but a cup win lasts forever. Me and my Leeds mates were talking about how **** football is nowadays as a competitive sport and came to the conclusion that we are very unlikely to see our teams win a major trophy (top league, FA Cup or League Cup) in our lifetimes, we are all late 20s early 30s

I still think we have basically no chance of winning either cup this year, but if those are the choices I’ll go with cup win

Exactly my brother's story and when he was a lad Saints, and indeed any well-run club, had a chance of winning something (1976 Cup Final) now I fear you are completely correct. Remember what the top six directors said after Leicester won the league, 'This must never happen again'.....
