Risky sometimes but top class shot stopper. I'm happy to see how he gets on in the premier league, but he's getting better under Adkins.
Kelv deserves another crack at the Premiership in my opinion. He had a torrid time in the one season he had with Sunderland in 2005/06, but he's a better keeper now and has grown in maturity massively since he's been at Saints. Add to that, he is an outstanding shot stopper and could probably hold his own amongst other Premiership goalkeepers.
I agree, he's been with Saints a number of years now, had a career beforehand he'd probably sooner forget and I think he really is at the top of his game now, even if he is getting on, under Adkins new regime. It's not like I'm trying to hurry him along and buy somebody else in to replace the guy who had been so loyal and between the posts so many years, but to be honest it must be getting to the point where Cortese must be having serious thoughts about a replacement. That said, I too would love to see if he can step up the Premier League and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he did! (so long as he stopped rolling the ball out rather than hoofing it upfield and giving me a heart attack when their strikers close onto it every other game)
I'd be happy to see either Kelv or Bart play in the Premier League. He is getting on a bit though, so you never know when the rapid decline might begin.
Sorry to say, but I can't see that changing. Adkins has got the team playing out from the back continental style - so you'll rarely see the goalkeeper or the back four hoof it up in an attempt in vain to reach the strikers. The only players that are encouraged (when in an ideal situation) to knock the ball up the park are Richardson and Fox, who in my opinion can play the long ball very well.
Fair point. I wasn't encouraging a long ball, the way Nige has us play is beautiful football, but as Andoversaint probably better put it, he can be risky sometimes!
Indeed. Kelvin being nearly 36 isn't an issue for me. Freidel and Schwarzer were in opposing goals in the live game yesterday, and are 40 and 39 respectively. Moreover, Freidel said he believes that he has at least one more season left in him after this season (and thus signed a 2 year deal with Spurs, rather than 1 year) whilst Schwarzer said that he has ambitions to play in the 2014 World Cup.
Am I the only one slightly worried that people on here are talking as though we've already been promoted? It's great that Saints fans are being optimistic again for the first time in years (and rightly so), but we've still got 2/3rds of the season left... If we are in the Premier League next season, I have to admit that I'd be slightly nervous about Kelvin - as much as I love the guy. He's never been that great at claiming crosses and commanding his box, so can you imagine him trying to deal with a Stoke long throw?
I guess it's always going to the case though. When you're in the position we're in, I think it's natural for people to start getting ahead of themselves. Even I've found myself caught up in it all recently, and I'm someone who has only just (and I mean just!) accepted the notion that we're good enough to finish in the top 6 (still don't believe that we'll finish in the top 2).
I must say I've never been a great fan of SKD, he's a good shot stopper in every sense of the word but his inability to keep hold of crosses always has me panicking when a long ball comes into our area! I'd love to get someone like Joe Lewis from Peterborough, tall and agile with great potential!
