Shef Wed deserved it so fair play. Our line-up was a disgrace. Doesn't change how I think Howe is doing in any way but part of me has to wonder whether he either underestimated Shef Wed, overestimated our reserve team or if he was trying to angle for more players.

Dubravka, Lewis, Lascelles, Manquillo, Anderson, Ritchie, Murphy coming in from the wilderness to play and then Isak hobbling in from the physioroom (he looked like he's going to need a few more games to get match fit) was optimistic team selection at best. Of those 8 only Murphy has really played this season, and even then only due to injuries to much better players. Thought Joelinton actually had a good game but Botman looked like someone who relied on a settle defence around him and instead got Lewis and Lascelles either side of him - no-one deserves that. It's the first game he's played in that we've lost - 17th or so game - and no surprises he was next to Lascelles for it.

Manquillo who was probably our best player for much of the match, not that he's ever going to get picked over Trippier so was a waste of his effort really.

Lewis, Lascelles and Wood were dire. Anderson and Murphy ran around but looked lost (at least Anderson is young and local). Dubravka spent the game sat in a chair watching the match, even when they were actively shooting at goal.

Oh well. If we lose on Tuesday and/or drop points to Fulham next week then it'll really make this team selection look worse.
I don't think he underestimated Sheff Wed, they simply arent very good. It was the same team we were beating last season but without their star player (Bannan).

Not using my red and white blinkers, I have to agree with Chief's comment about your league position being false. I've seen your last 3 games now and I think you've looked poor in all of them. Longstaff and Anderson, I don't think will cut it in the premier league long term.

You have definitely improved from last season. It will be a gradual process and to consolidate as a regular champions league club, I think you'll have to bin Eddie off. I can't imagine your fanbase would put up with his tactics when you play the top clubs on a regular basis.

Today showed your squad lacks depth but in general your signings have been mainly very good. Its going to take a while, yet.

Think the owners of Newcastle are spot on at the moment....personally I hope they finish top four and that they continue with Eddie howe

It is worth remembering that we had 11 points from 19 games, there are a lot of players who aren't good enough for the Premiership in our squad. Longstaff and Anderson will survive for a little while due to be homegrown at club but aren't top 6-8 players.

Not sure I agree with the word false. Our squad, and probably first team, aren't in the best 6 squads in the league (nor would anyone expect it to be, people talk of us spending and yet our front 3 cost less than Anthony, our midfield cost less than Casemiro and our back 5 cost less than Maguire) but we are halfway through the season and we are where we are. We've played I think 7 of last seasons top 10 away from home, it's not like we've had easy games.

As regards what you have seen of us, if you didn't watch the 9 games in a row we won and then tuned in for the DDL then yeah we didn't look very good :)

I think we'll finish 5th or 6th. I'd be made up with that or even 7th and a cup final.

Willock - £25m
Joelinton - £40m
Guimareas - £36m

Casemiro - £60m
Eriksen - £0
Fernandes - £40m

Should have specified, when we played you. We had Longstaff in, our midfield cost around 70m which I, perhaps erroneously, thought that was what Casemiro cost. Either way the overall arguments of press and media of Newcastle spending is ludicrous really so far, our squad is made up of players like Ritchie, Shelvey, Longstaff, Lascelles, Dummett, Murphy and around 5 others who played for us in the Championship 5 years ago...

Think it was reported as £50m up front and around £8m add ons. People love adding £20m to our transfer fees though.

This is true, not unusual though. Joelinton was initially said to be 30m with 10m of international appearances and goalscoring add ons. Always reported as 40m now even though I reckon he probably hasn't triggered those add ons :)

Edit: Works all around. Buying club appease fans by splashing cash, selling club appease fans for getting a good deal, media want as big a number as possible.

Well that's one way of looking at it.

It's also true to say that you have the highest net spend in England for 2022. Net spend exceeding 200 million. I'd expect a top 6 place for that.

Sure Chelsea's is £227m and Man Utd's is £226m, West Ham's was more than us and Forrests spent more but this is clearly just an oversight on your part with you not wearing red and white blinkers <whistle>

It depends on which timescale you pick and what figures to chose to include.

If you pick the 2021-22 season then we weren't in the top few as we'd only spent £25m in the Summer before then spending £90m+ in the January.

If you pick 2022-23 season then we're about 8th highest.

However, I think if you pick the year 2022 we were at the top of spending.

It's all a bit theoretical anyway tbph. The figures by so many teams are just nuts and the numbers quoted are guidelines at best. Once you start looking at add-ons, signing on fees, wages, whether they are upfront or installments, etc then even if you somehow managed to get reliable figures it's only going to be part of the story.

Every "free" transfer and superstar signing a new contract tends to come with a hefty signing on fee, if I was running a club that'd be coming out of the transfer budget.
