From memory, I think it’s now about £14 a day. I don’t tend to get on at Ebbsfleet, I normally get on at Gravesend.

    Jeez £14!

Did they build/remodernise the station at Gravesend, I can remember a few years ago, they built a new road, something tells me it was round the back of the old station?

They refurbished Gravesend station a few years ago and added a third platform in the middle which is for the high speed line.

My passport like many now are biometric, so you technically don't need border force on return entry to a UK airport that has the technology.

Then at baggage collection you just leave via the Green lane, along with all your excess duty free, oh yeah.

Wasn't that how we were going to sort out the customs problem with the Northern Ireland & GB/Irish border? That's worked out well <whistle>

Biometrics has always worked fine when I've gone through an English airport, then get your baggage, green lane, job done, no humans required.

Northern Ireland are bunch of munters btw.

As with everything automation in one form or another is fine for the predictable and up to a point e.g. British biometric passport, British returning traveller with no extenuating circumstances. Anything outside of that and you will always need human intervention.

What about those in the UK ports on this side of the Irish Sea?

We need to get the trains automated in the same way we have the airports, and get those ticket offices closed down, do the same as airlines, purchase online digital tickets, stop unions holding us to ransom bro. Check your own luggage in, biometrics, lovely.

Royal Mail jobs be going next, as businesses look for alternative solutions. I honestly can't think at this present time, why anyone would even think of using Royal Mail over these last few weeks, which can only result in job losses in the longer term.

Nope, plenty of job vacancies out there mate. Airports are already automated in the main. Not sure why anyone would object to railway ticket offices being automated, the same as everything else online, I had to adapt, you can do it to if you try.

It's been a long time since I've used an airport but if that's what it's like it will be a long time till I do again. Sounds like a nightmare to me. Nobody at the airport to answer any questions I have about my ticket, nobody to make sure I label my luggage correctly and put it on the right belt to get to my plane, nobody to help me put my luggage on the belt if I'm an old fart and can't manage it on my own, nobody to ask where my gate is and nobody to explain any delays or cancellations. **** me, customer service has died a death!

Don't know how old you are, but I'm well past it now and can manage it, so I'll assume most people should be able to.

If you book online then you are already doing part the process. I will first search my airline tickets, then when I've got a particular date and price I want, I then look for accomodation. With online help such as things like trip adviser, google maps, it's not hard to get some insight to what you are choosing. If you use airbnb there will be plenty of reviews to guide you.

You have an app on your phone, for example easyjet, that is where you access your boarding cards. You can turn up to the airport, and self check-in your baggage to get rid of it, well in advance, remembering you may be carrying on hand luggage anyway. When you come back to the UK, you just go through the self service biometric queue, job done.

I think there is probably an airline person on the self check-ins should you need any help. Must admit, can't remember where I get the luggage labels from, not sure if they were sent in the post or somewhere at the terminal.
