On the selling club thing. Most clubs are. The only reason we haven't been is because we've been ****

That's true, but if he is to be sold it should be for the highest price and not just sold to say another championship for about 5m.

Agree it should be for the highest price. But if Everton or any other Prem club bid £5m, Rangers £5m, and Boro £10m, than as galling as it would be I'd take the higher fee.

Basically I'd obviously rather he went to the Premier or SPL. But the utmost importance is maximising the fee, and that might be from a more desperate EFL club than an EPL one.

I really dont see a championship club bidding for him. Not sure any would have the budget left in Jan, given FFP. Half of them are on the naughty step as it is.

I have been thinking about his interview the other day. I also look at what he did on the pitch. Looks a lad who fancies staying to me.

If he wants wages way outside of our pay grade then we shouldn't give him that much, nowt to do with lack of ambition it's common business sense. We have been down that route before way over spending and look where we ended up

I would venture to suggest the wages of say a young right back would be a lot less than for a proven goal scorer...

Never said they should all be on the same wage, but it still has to be within the budget of the club. I'm sure whatever the club offer home will probably make him the highest earner at the club

I think £10m prices the Championship out of it personally. I really really really REALLY hope we keep him.

Me too. He’s superb and can do the lot. Potential to be a Sunderland legend if he stays put.

But when the aim to to get to the prem or at least in the playoffs, then your assets should be kept safe

Brentford are the best example of how selling assets can work though - they sold quality players but signed players with the funds to improve the squad and the team. I agree we shouldnt just sell players for the sake of it but if a good offer comes in for any player we should seriously consider it. The key is using any funds we do receive to improve the squad

If we sold Stewart for 10m, it would be over 3200% profit. Not sure if we turn that down. Imagine if we signed his replacement for 7m, and further down the line got even a 500% profit off them.

There is no way they sell him for 10 and buy someone for 7. Max will be 2-3 million imo. And that's probably hopeful!

There's a clause in Michut's loan to sign him for 5m euros, and he plays in a position we have plenty of players, but we wouldn't spend roughly 2m more to replace our main striker?

I think if there was a 22 Yr old striker of the right calibre available for 7 million I believe we would pay it, like Jack Clarkes deal is reportedly going to cost us 5 million but we would expect to sell him in a few years for a lot more, they age and potential have to be right to invest, we will not invest 7 million on a 29 Yr old striker who will get us to the Premier league who will still only be worth 7 million.
We paid 300 thousand for Stewart who got us to the championship and is now worth 10 million, that is the plan and if recruitment get it right it could be fantastic for us as a club.
If we sign Michut for 5 million it will be because we believe in 4 years we can sell him for 20.
The whole set up of the club has changed and its not a case of signing players to get us to the Premier league and then try and stay there, it's all about the right recruitment of young players which in fairness we have done really well so far

I can't see the point of selling him to sign someone for 3 million less? Unless the lad is really wanting away and if he is, activate the 12 months see out the season and sell in the summer.

We may end up getting a couple million less but having him for the remainder of the season will be worth more. I get the feeling he is the type to still give his all even if he wants away?

I know know its the model but I can't look at it as we bought him for 300k so 10 million is a great profit. The reason he is 10 million, is because he is now playing like a player worth that! Alright we might use that cash to sign a striker for 7 and get another in for 3 and both turn out class and end up worth 10 times that but its a huge risk.

Any other position or player I'd probably be less worried but I can't see us replacing Stewart with anyone that offers near to what he does!

If we sell him for 10m we won't be signing replacements that add up to 10m.

If we sell him for 15m we won't be signing replacements that add up to 15m.

I reckon he will go for about 10-12m and maybe the deal will push 15m with add ons. But the replacement will probably be Simms as part of the deal with Everton then another young striker for less than 2m.

Hope he stays and signs a 10year deal though.
