Im totally on the fence with wright, would love to keep him around for his influence off the field but also feel its the right thing to let him go and play football. Hes at the age where he needs to play every week and he wont get that with us. He isnt championship standard any more and i think its unfair keeping him for his off field influence only
I don't think he's done badly this season, couple of defensive flubs mixed with some decent performances. If he wants away then fair enough but quality wise I'd be happy to keep him to call on occasionally. If we're going with four at the back I don't see where a new CB signing fits in.
Suppose it depends whether he wants to be cover off the bench (if that) or play every week. He'd be an excellent signing for a L1 team I just don't see him getting in the 18 once everyone is fit
Think itll depend on if the club see alese as a lb or cb. I think wright has looked really dodgy this season - probably mainly due to not having a run of game but also his lack of mobility is a worry at this level. We need to keep looking for better players and porteous will be better than all our cbs in the next 2 seasons (excluding ballard who i think is the real deal) Any january signing for the 1st team has to improve us now and going forward and porteous def does that
Well, maybe. He's only played in Scotland so we'd have to see on that one. Batth's only recently turned 32 and should have a good few years left it's not like he relies on speed. I also see Alese doing well at CB.
Yeah he has only played up here but plenty good players have come from scotland. Hes an exciting prospect if we do sign him ill be happy for sure
I'm not saying good players can't come from Scotland but I am saying that it's one of those leagues that players need to leave before they can be judged properly because the standard isn't great.
Depends how much you watch them, i knew alan campbell would be a class signing for luton last season as seen him loads. Likewise the boy hickey who is now at brentford. Porteous has all the tools to step up, not saying he 100% will but hes the type of player that can contribute now and probably has higher upside than most of our other CBs
I would say the key to this transfer would be the cost, hes in the last 6 months of his contract so could get him on a knock back price in jan
Judging Scotland by how many times they qualify for the World Cup and Euros, they have not produced any really great ones lately. However, I will start off.Slim Jim Baxter
The fact our best player for the last 18 months came from scotland (including playing semi pro) shows there are some very handy players in scotland
yeh I'm not buying the idea that players from Scotland aren't good enough in one thread then on another thread everyone is desperate to do whatever we can to keep the last player we signed out of Scotland (and from the division below in Scotland as well by the by)
No, indeed not. But the very point that they're unproven is why we SHOULD sign them. The consensus is always, like you've said, that the SPL is weak, so clubs are often reluctant to gamble on them. But thats why we should. fits the model entirely. A good signing from Scotland can multiply in value in 6 months. Whereas a signing from an established league like the EPL or even the Championship is much more of an economic gamble, as they come with high fee and high wages.
FWIW I don't think we will sign the guy. don't see why we would sign a CB this window. Although if they really do rate him then great, get him in.
