Root will be gutted to miss out. It's massively ironic that he's the only one to get out cheaply given how many times he's rescued England with a ton.
100 for Brook! First time in Test history that 4 different players have scored a century on Day 1 of a Test. Stokes in full T20 mode now...
This is crazy. You'd think normally with a pitch this flat this would be a draw but at the speed we are going at we have so much time and so many runs to play with.
Just another 4 runs would have broken the record for most runs in a day, but hey ho. What an incredible performance by England!
There's no reason for England to declare anytime soon so I genuinely think Sri Lanka's record of 970 odd is under threat for most runs in an innings.
Having been lucky enough to secure myself Ashes tickets next summe,r I was starting to feel a little hopeful.. then I saw this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/63820801 Some things don't change!
I'm so pleased for all of them, but Brook in particular. He's really deserved his chance after scoring so heavily for Yorkshire. There's little question that Bairstow will come back in once he's recovered (apparently he's hopeful for the Ashes). So it's potentially really unfortunate for Foakes that he was the only one who failed to make it off the toilet seat this morning. Could very easily slot Bairstow into Foakes' no.7 spot, and he's missed the chance to smash a score in this test. What a crazily brilliant day.
If the full 90 overs had been played, and the 6.75 RR maintained, there was every chance of England topping 600 and Stokes making it 5 centuries in one day!
Having both the highest-scoring and second-highest-scoring overs in test cricket for England, in your second test, seems good.
