If even half of what I read in The Times this morning is true, today is not going to be pretty.

All could’ve been avoided. This government and what’s waiting to govern are both truly awful. We’re pretty ****ed if you ask me. If we keep on electing these clowns we’ll keep on getting the same bollocks.

This lot have had twelve years, during which they gave us years of unnecessary austerity, took us out of the biggest free trade bloc on the planet, completely crashed the economy just a few weeks ago, and are now about to return us to another period of austerity as a consequence. You could at least give the other lot a chance to see if they can do any better before denouncing them as clowns too

Rather ironic that you talk damningly of austerity (quite rightly too in my opinion) but sing the praises of the EU, who forced austerity on the people of Greece….or am I missing something?

I don't agree with everything the EU does and thought that the treatment of Greece was overly harsh. I do know that we were better off in the EU, though.

We're not in the EU any more, why not just focus on the almighty mess the Tories have caused?

They’ll get their chance, Strolls, regardless of what I think of them. Is it not enough for you that I think these Tories are a bunch of twats?

I thought it was the leader of the opposition who responded to the budget? Or isn’t what Hunt has just delivered classed as a budget? Sounded very much like one to me. Reeves is just reciting a lump of propaganda she could have written a week ago, not a word of response to what has just been announced. Not very nimble.

I thought it was always the shadow Chancellor. Didn't hear Reeves but thought Hunt's budget was fairly balanced on first hearing.

It wasn't technically a budget it was the Autumn statement & the response is always done by the shadow chancellor

For proper budgets, which usually happen in March, it’s always the Leader of the Opposition who responds. I think this is classified as an Autumn Statement. What Kwarteng did is officially known as a Verbal Unintentional Suicide Note.

I’m in no position to judge the statement or whatever it was. He certainly delivered it professionally. If the target was only to keep the markets onside we will know the answer pretty soon. Has he done enough to close the hole in government finances caused by the doubling in cost of servicing government debt gifted us by Truss/Kwarteng? Not my area of interest or expertise.

Does look like to be another **** few years particularly for those on sub average incomes who will be paying more tax because of the freezing of tax thresholds. I wonder if this will lead to an increase in people supplementing their paid income with universal credit?

There was a lot of expectation management beforehand, so I doubt there will be much reaction from the markets. He committed to benefits rising in line with inflation, so that should be some help to the worst off. As you allude to, many of those on Universal Credit are actually in work, but their wages aren't enough to live on. Better to increase the minimum wage to a level that takes them out of this benefit, I would say.
