As an (ex-) polling staff member, and cynical by default, I spent several polling days thinking of how the system could be defrauded, so: If you work in a polling station, you know, by looking at the lists, who has and who hasn't voted. As such, at the end of the day, once the polling station has closed, anyone who isn't scrupulously honest could cast a vote for one or more of the people who hadn't already voted, which could easily amount to several hundreds, if not thousands, of people. That's why polling stations have more than one person working in them (or should have), as any attempt at voter fraud would also involve the other people working there. This is not to say it doesn't happen, just that it ought to need more than one dishonest person.

I still think that the reason Trump goes on about voter fraud is because he did it in 2016. He goes on about it too much and knows too much about it.

In 2020 he then loses (legitimately) and pulls the fraud card as he knows how to do it. In 2016 he used the fraud, on 2020 his ego was so massive he didn't think he needed it.

...Now I am sounding like a conspiracy theorist!

Great news for those who want to see the spectacle of the Republican party tearing itself apart!

Just read that Older People Travel passes acceptable, Young People Railcards and Student ID not

This is clearly gerrymandering by the right

Stories that the right want to increase voter age in US due to Gen Z blocking the predicted red wave (72% of Women 18-29 voted Democrat!)

I agree. My question was out of interest and rather diverted from this main point

Bias for OP ID and against Youth ID is criminal

Take a look at the quotes attributed to Michael Gove. The hypocrisy is mind blowing when you compare what he says the Housing Association guy should have done with the inaction of himself and his party.
I would call him a ****, but he lacks the depth and sensitivity to be one.
And as for the last sentence of the piece. The Tory party voted down an attempt to bring into law that ALL rented properties MUST BE HABITABLE!

A BOY of two died due to prolonged exposure to mould in a one-bedroomhousing association flat, an inquest found.

Awaab Ishak died in hosp-ital of a respiratory condition in December 2020, despite his parents complaining about mould around their home.

Faisal Abdullah and Aisha Aminin, from Sudan, were told to paint over it by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Greater Manchester, in 2017.

Yesterday a coroner called the tragedy a “defining moment” for the housing sector.

In June 2020, Faisal began a legal claim but policy meant any repairs would not be done until this was settled.

Health visitors also raised issues of mould with RBH.

Awaab’s parents “shouted as loudly as we could” but were left feeling “worthless” by RBH, claiming they were treated that way because they were not from the UK.

Senior coroner Joanne Kearsley said: “How, in the UK in 2020, does a two-year-old child die from exposure to mould in his home?

“The tragic death of Awaab will and should be a defining moment for the housing sector in terms of a deepening of understanding surrounding the issue of damp and mould.”

Housing Secretary Michael Gove called it an “unacceptable tragedy” but said a lack of funding was “no excuse”, adding: “All this, ‘If only we had more Government money’ – do your job, man.”

He summoned RBH boss Gareth Swarbrick to explain, saying he earns over £150,000 and is “hiding behind procedure”. He added: “It beggars belief [he] is still in office.”

Mr Swarbrick said: “We allowed a legal disrepair process, widely used in the housing sector, to get in the way of promptly tackling the mould. We must make sure this can never happen again.”

He was paid £170,000 in 2020/2021, and £185,000 the year after Awaab died, RBH records show. Social housing activist Kwajo Tweneboa said it was “disgusting” Mr Swarbrick earned so much while “failing to ensure a decent standard of living for those his organisation are supposed to be providing a service to”.

The Rochdale inquest was told an inspection in July 2020 found mould in the kitchen, bathroom and a bedroom cupboard needed treatment but no action was taken.

Labour MP Clive Betts said it shows some social housing is unfit to live in and called for “serious investment”.

The Government said it will “no longer stand for” landlords failing tenants.

They should have dealt with the extremists infiltrators decades ago.

I find it somewhat ironic, that throughout the 70s and 80s we were warned from all quarters, about the dangers of left wing extremists infiltrating socialist and social democratic parties in the west, and yet all the while the danger was from the right.

Nationalists, bigots, and doctrinaire libertarian fanatics, have taken over both the Republican Party in the US and the British Conservative Party, while across Europe the far right are making inroads almost everywhere. And when Greece had the temerity to buck this trend, and elect a genuinely left wing government, all the world’s international institutions moved quickly to strangle the project. Not so in Italy, where it seems a neo-fascist government is acceptable to the international community.

To be honest I think all of this is a reaction to globalism.

Globalism has only enriched the elites. It has decimated the lower & middle classes in the UK & Europe.

We have outsourced everything, created an over financialised economy with little productive output. And what little output is produced is hoarded in offshore tax havens instead of taxed correctly and spent improving the country for all.

Unfortunately a declining nation is ripe for right wing ideology to take root. And make no mistake the UK (and the rest of the West) is in terminal decline.

Time will tell whether or not our decline is terminal. I still have hope for my country, for Europe, and the world.

But yeah, over the last 14 years, since the global banking crisis, the rich have got richer, the poor have got poorer, and those in the middle have also got poorer and more insecure. Those are the circumstances in which populism and extremism thrives.

Agree. Globalism is not in itself wrong; it was the way it was done - rather than increasing the standards across the world, it exploited those that had lower standards and pay, and it was not controlled by governments that care about people standard of living, but by elites increasing their own wealth.

I may have missed it but I can't find any reference to criminalising drag performances, only definitions of terms. But if there is, well done Texas. Something we could learn from over here, and the less we see of Eddie Izzard the better <ok>.

And yes, it is all about the children as Kitty Demure says below.

And this is why children and drag artists do not mix. They are, and always have been (up until now) adult entertainers.

Is that the derivation of 'travesty'? Didn't know that; every day's a school day.

And just think of what glorious comedy from of the likes of Monty Python and the League of Gentlemen we would've missed without the drag scenes...

I think it's the other way round, the English is derived from the Italian, which means "unusual" or "opposite". No 7 please confirm?

Edit: Sorry I misread what you put, you are if course right, I think!

You did miss it. It's a refining of terms as to a specific subsection of criminal law.

It also might surprise you (shouldn't surprise anyone at all) to learn that the drag queen "exposing their genitals" is a complete fake:

    https://apnews.com/article/fact-check-drag-queen-story-hour-photo-965766299271

You are being lied to, again and again, and each time you lap it up and ask for seconds.

In 2016, they didn't take him seriously, but also didn't want to anger his fans by attacking him vigorously, because every other Republican in the primary was going to need his voters in order to become the candidate. By the time they realized the depth of support for Trump, it was already over. Then, they were able to talk themselves into believing that he'd help them politically, but now they're under no illusions.

The problem, though, is that after spending five years tongue-bathing the guy, it's really hard to turn on a dime and say: oh, hey, it turns out that he's an incompetent, narcissistic parasite on the body politic after all. But it's even more difficult because the Republican brand in recent years is explicitly anti-elite, and anti-media. Doubling down in the face of criticism is their whole ethos, and getting attacked by the media is a badge of honour; now, they're going to have to convince their people to listen the media critiques from the party elites and their adjuncts. Good luck with that! There's every chance that they lose their nerve and fall back in line behind him before the primary campaign even officially starts.

One other fun element: there is nothing preventing a candidate from running while under indictment. There is also nothing preventing a candidate running for the presidency while in prison. Eugene Debs was the Socialist Party candidate in 1920 while in prison for sedition, and took 3.4% of the vote. And given the dynamics of the modern Republican Party, getting indicted in one of the several criminal investigations into his actions would probably only boost his popularity.
