Just seen that Gills result. What a turn up...
@brb no doubt celebrated with a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie and a litre bottle of Tizer
Financially a lifesaver that for Gills who are on the bones of their arses.
On another note, Gills are currently the only side based in Kent playing in the football league. That seems mad to me. And soon Gills will be out too, not a single football side from Kent.
I can't see us progressing any where fast under our current Chairman, he dosen't have deep enough pockets to challenge todays demands. Been some rumours for a while now circulating on twitter that an American company is looking to buy us, but I just repeat it's but rumours within the fan base.
The last time a different Kent club entered the top four tiers was Maidstone United, but they soon folded. But they are back again with a new ground, currently playing their first season in the National League after promotion from National South last season.
Our next nearest rivals would be Ebbsfleet, formerly (many years ago) Gravesend and Northfleet, ideally situated just off the A2, rebuilt the main stand, and there was potential for a theme park Paramount within past planning permissions, but as of yet, it has not evolved. Ebbsfleet swapped places with Maidstone last season and were relegated to NL South.
Dover sometimes make the headlines, one being some years back, when they knocked us out of the FA Cup, but I'd question their financial viability to compete at a higher level, especially after falling foul of covid rules and getting hammered with a fine, and points deduction all unfairly applied imho.
So that would just leave Charlton to sweep up, as they always have done from Kent, especially when they use to run free coaches from various areas, built into the season ticket.
The Gills do have a new location for a ground and various planning permissions, albeit they may have expired by now (do they expire?) - The big white elephant as I call it, but I accept that I may have to leave tradition behind, if the money ever does come in from another backer.
I have heard about this weird Charlton connection with them offering free rides into London, crafty ****ers.
But I've been doing some reading and apparently there's a massive contingent of Chelsea fans from Kent these days?
They're the ones that came over in the boats.
