Every game is a gamble. Every forward pass, shot on goal, or attempt to beat a defender is a gamble. The game is about taking risks, being brave, trying it on. No guts, no glory...

There are educated gambles and then there are pure dice rolls

Odds exist for a reason.

This appointment is more akin to a coin flip than an educated guess.

Even Sean Dyche and Gerrard have more managerial pedigree than this bloke

Sorry but that is utter nonsense. Ankersen has had Jones on his shortlist for a long time - he has obviously done his homework on him. It's not even an educated guess. Jones has been thoroughly researched and fits the criteria SR are looking for.

Disagree on Gerrard. But we might have different definitions of “pedigree”.

Would you have preferred either Dyche or Gerrard? I certainly wouldn't have tbh. Assuming that the style of play will be better than Dyche anyway.

Find it weird people criticising the board for lack of ambition, then on the same hand thinking Dyche would have been a better option. Decent manager, but employing Dyche would have been the ultimate "let's make sure we stay in the league, and sod the style" - surely that's the very definition of a lack of ambition?

I would.

Nathan Jones has no history of playing youth, doesn’t really fit the way we have been trying to play at all, and almost no pedigree. Luton don’t play attractive football.

The one time he tried to manage a bigger club it was a catastrophe. Not even just a bad time. It was a literal disatster.

I see absolutely nothing about him that makes me think he is a good fit. 100% would rather dyche or Gerrard personally. And I don’t want either of those.

We have gone for that exact sort of manager though. Lol. Except without the proven history.

Jones is a “sod the style” kind of manager.

Surely if we’d brought in Gerrard there would have been intense media scrutiny that we could do without. Oh, and there would’ve been another melt(ed cheese) down.

Yeah, I'm still not enthused but I am holding onto the following:

- Rasmus is hugely focused on analytics and spotting patterns in the data

- He's been looking at Jones for quite some time and Smith and Frank (his two appointments at Brentford) were both big hits

- Crocker has good connections to get references and knows good coaches too

- Jones has a sustained track record of punching above his weight with under-resourced teams (comparatively speaking + I know it's only been with Luton etc etc, but you don't get lucky for that many years of continual improvement)

- The recurring comments from his ex-players focus on his people skills and man management being one of his greatest strengths, which was evidently a blind spot with Ralph and suggests an instant desire from the club to address and reassure the players during the upcoming break

You can see the rationale behind the decision, even if you don't necessarily agree with it - and I'm not sure I do!

I've still not heard all that much focusing on his tactical acumen or his style of play - and I do worry that he might be found wanting at this level - as the feedback seems more geared around his team's collective desire, his individual emotion and ability to lead a group while demonstrating good people management.

But once announced then I'll get on with supporting the team, as that's all I can do. :)

While this will be a Rasmus appointment, Crocker was at the FA when Jones did his time there with Gareth Southgate.

Focus is player development above all else and why Jones is being interviewed.

If the curry was made of rotten skunk, with a reheated cheese sauce left out in the sun for 3 weeks, I'm fairly sure most of us wouldn't want the chef to make us anything. We wouldn't need to taste it to know they don't fancy it

Or

You've made your fortnightly trip to your favourite restaurant with your mates and you are all having the same meal. But you've got fed up with yours long before anyone else so you throw a tantrum because none of your mates think the same as you. "Every time we come here we get served up the same old crap, the chef doesn't even know his best cooks. Why am I the only one who can see this?" Some of the others after hearing all the shouting, start to shout too and eventually the management take the meal back to placate the noisy customers. They then suggest you try another dish, it's called Naan Jalfrezi (or Nathan Jones in English) but although you don't have a clue about what it might taste like, you say "I don't like the look of that it must be ****e. I didn't want the last meal but I don't want this one either, it looks like they've thrown together a few cheap ingredients no one has ever heard of."
Although your mates say you won't know what it's like until you've tried it you're adamant. "We deserve better than this, I said we should never have come to The Luton Bengal Palace in the first place" and throw another tantrum.
