But getting better known in Welsh. I've got to say that the revival of the language in my lifetime has been wonderful. Rather the opposite of what was lost as my father grew up from 1908 till 1950s. By 1970 or so I became pretty fluent through school and Chapel but lost it all when I moved away.....use it or lose it!!!!

Nothing wrong with the revival of the Welsh language nor with those who want to learn it - the best of luck to all. What irks me is the unwelcome imposition of it on those who decide not to through choice.

I see no reason why both languages can't live together, but a minority trying to turn back the relentless tide of history in everyday life for the majority is very divisive.

We have the S4C channel for Welsh matters and often Welsh International football matches with only Welsh commentary which in itself discriminates against the English speaking Welsh who would like to follow their country - yes, their country.

Bringing back the Italian analogy clingo brought up earlier in the thread, on that basis you could argue for the Italians to start putting up bilingual signs in Latin, and getting the Pope to do the football commentaries.

 

Well a simple bit of information from Brizzle has turned into another epic about the Welsh language.
So, our national football team changes Wales to Cymru.
Who dies as a result?

That's way these football threads tend to go - there's always a tangential route as a spinoff that takes them off track.

No problem for me anyway and nobody died, nobody has had his human rights corrupted - it's just a discussion.

The problem seems to be that opinions can grate on some posters with a differing viewpoint on the subject.

Its not quite that simple.
Often, the only reason S4C get to broadcast games is BECAUSE its in Welsh. Sky / BT Sport / Amazon Prime may have primary broadcast, S4C secondary.
S4C are not entitled to broadcast those games in English. So no prejudice, just legal constraints.
Where S4C have the primary broadcast rights they put english comentary on the red button.
The same with the rugby.

I think that its Amazon Prime are preventing S4C's entitlement to broadcast games by putting Welsh commentary behind the red button, removing S4Cs argument for broadcast rights.

In summary, an English speaker (me) can watch the game with Welsh comentary for free or pay to watch it in English.

 

I get that remote - it's actually Premium TV that has the broadcasting rights to those Welsh games and S4C has the right to Welsh language coverage.

Some threads, like this one, bring out the antagonist in me.
I have some feelings on the matter, a proud English speaking, England living Welshman.
I am proud of my heritage, much of my Dad's side of the family are fluent Welsh speakers, and my Dad's dad only spoke english as a second language, and I'm pleased much is being done to strengthen Welsh culture and use of the language.

However, like sparkey, i don't feel it should be forced upon people.
LBGTQ+ (losing track of the letters), veganism, wokism, greenism (EV drivers who dont understand how poluting the production of EVs is), etc, etc.
Happy for people to make a life choice in those directions, passively advertise it, but dont foist it upon people.

 

If the wee Jimmy Kranky Fish woman gets her way on independence then I certainly wouldn't rule out a rebrand of the nation in such a way...

 

Someone here summed it up well as the noisy minority getting its way against the passive majority. That should never happen.

To be fair, he's a good egg and rarely let's anyone down....

I'm not sure either Colwill or Zac Davies are going to make the plane out at the moment and even Bale is a potential doubt (though I'd imagine he'd be on the plane even if he had a leg amputated TBH).

So we may not actually have much choice??

Its currently where we're at.
Back in the day we had a good team when everyone was fit.
We now have a good squad when everyone is fit.
Unfortunately, a couple injuries and we struggle for depth. This is particularly accute when its our star players.
Hopefully, tournament cycle on cycle we'll continue to generate depth to the squad.

 

Slightly different from the old days in as much as there's a definite team ethic and we can be really well organised. Of course the big names make a difference but I think we've shown we can give many countries a game in their absence.

 

Just had a flick through this thread to see if anyone has mentioned it (not sure) but looking at the World Cup fixtures, if Wales qualify from their group which the should do and then win their last sixteen match, which they might do, then their next game is the same day as the Bluebirds away game to Stoke. If so have any provisions been made for postponing this and any other fixtures? Of course this applies to any other championship and lower league teams but not the Prem who don’t start again until Boxing Day.

 

I can only imagine the reason to be we play 8 more league fixtures in a season than the Prem clubs so have to start back earlier.

That's just to get to the extra Championship playoff games during May for those involved which is something else the Prem clubs don't have to factor in.

 

Done some rooting around and can't find an answer to that one Irish. I assume the EFL will make decisions on a club by club basis. I know they've been ok with postponing fixtures at lower levels during qualifying games.
But as I say, that's just an assumption.
