I hope Marshall wins the next one, if for no other reason than so we don't have to suffer the American talking afterwards.
Marshall could do to get better corner men and trainers. If she wants to go for the big punch, she needs her feet set. If she wants to move around, she should do it behind a stiff jab. Doing either would have got her a couple of rounds tonight. Although she arguably lost, Mayer showed how a taller person should fight a busier smaller one. The corner were coming out with some really naff comments, that weren't really advice or motivation.
All of this is right... I said earlier, she never used her height advantage, reach advantage, standing off and jabbing would have had to bring Shields in to score and then pick her off. For me she fought the fight like a school yard scrap, there was no real thought to it and that is down to her trainers. The comment at the end of the 9th from her corner (was it Peter Fury) of 'go out and do it for us' was crass.
Marshall was also far too square on. The corner really didn't seem to offer much in the way of good advice though, and it looked like her trainers didn't prepare her with the right game plan, and the expectation seemed to be that Marshall would bomb Shields out, with no plan b in case they couldn't land cleanly. Either that, or she's more limited in ability than I think, but I doubt that. To be fair, it's all so much easier when you're sat watching in your comfy chair, compared to being excited and in front of millions of viewers watching a trained athlete trying to knock your head off and they can both feel very proud of their performance, and how they conducted themselves. Cracking fight to watch, so full credit to both, but disappointing for Marshall. I'm sure she'll be back entertaining us soon enough.
Great punch for Plant beating Dirrell, but ****ty ‘celebration’ in my view. I understand Dirrell had been a knob before the fight, but then loads are. Too dangerous a sport, and been more than one death this year, for this to be acceptable I think
I wanted Marshall to win, I was a bit disappointed with her performance to be honest. It was a bit cumbersome. Shields deserved to win. She was more clinical and accurate and she put together much better combinations. As a boxer she was far more polished. Dubois on the undercard looks something special considering she’s still only 21.
