Anybody who dismisses the relevance of the Royal family to our tourism industry is either just a bit simple or in denial... Many a tourist has stood outside Buckingham Palace with the misplaced hope of a glimpse of a Royal ... Heritage is a huge part of our tourism attraction to the rest of the world ... I'm not a Royalist... but I am a realist ... there will be thousands of tourists coming to the UK solely to witness the state funeral ... the republicans will hate that ... but it doesn't make it less true.
Not when they can blame a Royal Death, a Tory Government and Brexit for the increase in fuel caused. by an illegal invasion by Russia, most of them think they would be better of if we were ruled by Russia anyway As the old Yorkshire saying goes "You can't educate Pork"
As one of the few millennials on the thread I blame the pound tanking against the dollar to its lowest level in my lifetime more than any of those.
Over there they dont try to educate Pork, they elect them as President Another reason to keep a Constitutional Monarchy as head of State albeit a trimmed down one in future
Versailles actually has more tourists a year than any royal palace/castle/estate in the UK. The tourism thing is just a myth.
That may be something to do with the turnstiles at Buckingham Palace not working properly... or Liverpool fans with fake tickets climbing over the railings rather than queuing in an orderly fashion ... same old, same old ... and I'm sure the lure of Versailles has nothing to do with it being the most celebrated residence of the French 'Sun King'
I think so, or at least how important the royals are in bringing those tourists in. Who imo would come anyway, charge em a ton to walk round the palace, thousands a day.
The palace of Versailles. How poignant that should be the example - the place that the impoverished working class stormed to capture the royals and bring in the mighty republic. Yet millions flock there every year. I have another. I was teaching about the Taj Mahal. Millions go there every year too. It was built as a tomb for a dead queen. Now there's an idea for Buck Palace on the 19th. And once it's all over, I bet plenty would come every year to take a butchers at that
This is exactly it. . Too many people saying "but we don't want Trump". Fine, give the Presidency very minimal powers (or none at all, or don't have a President). The royal family, or someone facilitating what they do, is not needed. There's no need for a Royal or a President. There's no need to drastically change anything. The royal family has very little power or function anyway.
