I'm sorry she's dead, she seemed like a nice old lady, but that's the extent of my reaction. However, I recognise and respect that other people feel the loss more strongly and perhaps need a 'little time to contemplate things, such as dignity and respect'. Such people can take that time, by not going to football matches, or pubs, or shops, or anywhere else that might eat into their contemplation time. Why do the rest of us have to have enforced contemplation time? Judging by the overall reaction, the EFL have got this decision badly wrong.
I wonder how the decision is arrived at? A call from govt to efl/epl along the lines of 'this is only a suggestion (and don't forget who's making it) but how about...'?
How many times have we attended a football match preceded by a minutes silence for the death of some obscure 1950s kit man from the opposition? Really can’t fathom why some people think a similar mark of respect should be given to the Queen.
A full stadium belting out the national anthem vs sitting at home doing nothing… I think I know which one is a bigger sign of respect
I'd have said a collective expression such as that as opposed to cancelling would be the win-win situation some appear to be saying is impossible.
I think some people are very confused by the distinction between the person and the institution, but in either event, I'm far happier living the life I do, than I would be had I been forced into the life they were press ganged in to. I reckon it's a fair bet that none of those claiming the Queen had a life of privilege, are prepared to give up the privilege they have of being in the top 15% of wealthiest people on the planet, simply by the virtue of an accident of birth.
Possibly so. And given her age I’m surprised that there wasn’t an agreement in place that all sports and society as a whole could have gone along with.
I wouldn't be surprised if the plan that's been rolled out has actually been in place for a number of years - that said you'd expect a bit of common sense would prevail given they were probably drawn up 30 years ago. Theres a lot of money gone down the drain for a lot of people at a time where folk can Ill afford it. Seems a bit regressive to me.
Why would football be different from all the other sporting events taking place ? I think the EFL just followed the Premier League but not sure why they made the decision they did
There's a mixed bag... Football - Everything this weekend cancelled. Horse Racing - Everything this weekend cancelled. Cricket - Cancelled today, but expected to resume tomorrow. Cycling - Tour de Britain cancelled. Golf - Cancelled today, but expected to resume tomorrow. Rugby Union - Cancelled today, but expected to resume tomorrow. Rugby League - Games going ahead.
I wonder if the cancellation of the friday night games was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, then they thought afterwards they'd better do the rest to avoid complaints from clubs affected on the Friday? I've no idea why football has been picked out. Does seem to demonise the game a bit.
