Offside is less than two players between plauer and goal when the ball is played forward no?

If the ball is played back from the touchline to a guy stood with nobody between him and goal he is not offside?

Doesn’t matter where the ball goes back or forward. If the player is behind the man that plays the ball you can’t be offside. But if he’s ahead and the ball goes back then it’s still offside.

if the guy is in the touch line when pulls it back then it’s impossible for anyone to be ahead of him so will automatically be onside

What was frustrating was the commentators questioning which side of the offside line Coady was on going off Milner's outstretched foot...

Yes, his foot was the teams last line of defence but it was still behind the ball ffs. His foot was literally right next to the ball too so it was abundantly obviously the offside line needed to be from the ball! Dumb ****ers.

VVD won a header today and they claimed it was a free header despite him having at least two Everton players pulling away at him!!!

I like the 'I hope we can get a result today' or 'We/they got a result today' etc

Going to be a result no matter what, losing 1-0 is still a result, may not be a positive result but still a result.

It's the "he's got to do better there" - every time there's a half-chance that goes begging - that drives me mad.
Especially annoying from ex-players - as though none of them have ever scuffed a shot or misdirected a header.

Fuxake, Murphy has just done it now on MOTD - why do some people believe that if the ball goes backwards you can't be offside? I mean it might sometimes indicate that you're level or behind the ball, but not always. Obviously Coutinho wasn't offside, but I wish they'd ****ing employ 'experts' that know something about the rules of the game.

If Coutinho had been half a yard further forward yesterday it would have happened - the ball went backwards, but the forward was in an offside position when it was played. There can be several scenarios when the ball goes backwards but a player in an offside position goes back for it as well and then scores, or sets up another player to score. As to the second part of your answer, Coutinho was closer to the goal than the ball. He wasn't closer to the goal than the second-last opponent, but that's where the officials ****ed up, not because the ball went backwards.

The whole offside/VAR thing is a joke. Nobody seems to agree on anything. I was sure Rashford was offside against us, despite several views, I still think he was offside. There is no way Coutinho was offside yesterday. Cody was offside, but the arguments go on. You don’t get this problem in tennis or cricket when electronic equipment is used. VAR was meant to clear up the incorrect decisions, it seems to have generated a whole new set of problems

The officials go out of their way to give that goals against us.

Coady was a full half yard offside yesterday. It wasn't even close on very first pic but they spent 2mins trying to get him on.

Same for rashford. It was closer but they found a way.

To balance that out though, I still to this day think Lukaku was onside when he scored what should have been the winner in the LC final. Offside is supposed to be an objective thing, that is black or white. But, as we saw with Bobby at Villa a couple of seasons ago when it was first introduced into the Prem, it's subjective when they deem the microsecond that the pass is made (is it first contact with the ball, or when the ball leaves the foot - depending on how the ball is stroked/caressed or simply thumped, that is a difference), but also, as Bein Sports proved that day, you can simply move the lines around to support the on-field call. It wasn't so much they decided the terminator line was Bobby's armpit that day, it was just as much that they changed the line drawn on Mings' kneecap to the bottom of his thigh. It was so blatant it was shocking - but they still do that now as, you say, in Rashford's case, but also with that Lukaku one I said.

problem with tennis is you can easily see where the ball touches the ground as it’s a fixed point. Similar with cricket, plus they have umpired calls when it’s too close to judge perfectly and it’s accepted that the tech isn’t 100% so go with it.

with offside var, we are using it for 100% so either either on or off, but you also have 3d people rather than a fixed point.

I think it’s it was agreed that you take it from someone’s foot, makes it a lot easier as then you aren’t measuring someone’s shoulder compared to a foot.

also, if your head is slightly ahead of the guy next to you, but feet aren’t, are you really gaining an advantage? Take it back to what was offside brought in for, stop goal hanging and gaining a huge advantage. Offside needs a complete re-write to get back to what it was in for. Level is level. You don’t gain an Advantage by being level but your nose being slightly longer than your opponent!

Yes and no. I think Souness was advocating a couple of seasons back that if any part of the attacker is level with the defender, then they should be deemed onside. However, you still have to have a terminator line, and you still have to judge when the ball is played.

Listen, I was sceptical about VAR for offside until we played Porto away some seasons back, before it was introduced into the Prem. Mane looked a yard off to the naked eye (mine anyway), and in Europe they don't show you the replays until they've made a decision, but when Mo started celebrating when he saw the pitchside monitor, and then they showed Mane as being quite comfortably on, then I'm a believer. I still think VAR corrects more mistakes that would have been missed before it: that Coady 'goal' yesterday would have stood four seasons ago, let's be frank.

As it's Howard Webb who's coming in to take over, I'm not optimistic. And I heard on 5Live that they're still not backing down on that Newcastle disallowed goal yesterday - it's like listening to a Russian spokesperson maintaining that they never shell civilian positions as they carry out dead children and old women from destroyed hospitals.
