Bristol City manager happy to prove the doubters wrong as Robins make it three consecutive wins The Robins have set up a home tie with Lincoln in the next round after a hard-fought victory over Wycombe Nigel Pearson is happy to silence the doubters that wrote Bristol City off after the Robins booked their spot in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The Robins made it three wins on the spin but they had to work hard for it after Wycombe gave them a tough test in the second half. Dylan Kadji enjoyed a memorable debut to open the scoring on seven minutes as City looked to pick up where they left off against Cardiff. However, the hosts rallied in the second half and City's play looked disjointed as they struggled to get hold of the ball Wycombe were eager to put crosses into the box and they were rewarded five minutes into the second half when Ali Al-Hamadi headed in from close range. Pearson responded on the hour mark by introducing Alex Scott and Matty James and it changed the complexion of the game. It put City on the front foot and the visitors started to stamp their authority. Chris Martin had a header brilliantly saved from close range before Kal Naismith's superb delivery was knocked in by Kane Wilson to score his first goal for the club on the angle. There was also time for Antoine Semenyo, making his comeback from injury, to fire in the third in the final embers of the game when Tommy Conway unselfishly squared the ball when charging down on goal. It's now five undefeated for City and four wins in that period after picking up just a point in their opening three league matches. "Well, it’s interesting how people perceive it isn’t it?" Pearson said. "We were cannon fodder after a week and all of a sudden people want to talk in a different way. "We’re exactly the same team. Sometimes you get breaks and sometimes you don’t and we’re confident that we’ll score goals, it’s a good result for us and it’s important we recover from this and make sure we’re right for the weekend because that will be another really tough trip (to Blackpool). "If we can win cup games and get further then fine but the most important thing is the league. But I also think to develop a winning mentality it’s important to try and win every game. "For instance, if we’d been turned over tonight making seven changes people would moan about that, people always want to moan about something, I just let them. "It’s always about perspective and looking where you are. I’m not going to be shouting from the rooftops about how we’re doing. My job is to have a balanced view of where we are and where we’re trying to get to and more importantly how we’re going to do that. "Tonight was just an ugly game, and it was just an ugly game because it turned out to be that. But you’ve got to be able to win these games, so it doesn’t matter. I think our performances right from the start, Hull the first game of the season was a very good performance, but we weren’t in control of why we didn’t win.” Kadji is just the latest name to come through the youth ranks after he handed nine debuts to players last season. His performance remained a huge positive but Pearson highlighted the advantages of bringing players through with a lack of depth in his squad. He added: "I mean positive for him as a youngster from our academy, making a debut which is great. I’m pleased for him, it’s another positive indication of what we’re trying to do at the club right through the academy so that’s positive. The lads and Nige have done very well in recent games after we were cheated out of at least a point at Hull, and we failed to deliver against Sunderland. The real acid tests will be coming very soon though imho. We have a very poor record at Blackpool, and we also have tough looking away trips to Blackburn, Burnley and Norwich and home games against Huddersfield and Preston, two more bogey teams of recent seasons. If we can get 8 or more points from those games I'll be happy.
A swallow doesn't make a summer as the saying goes, a minor cup run doesn't put us at Wembley but a good pre season and victories over Coventry, Luton, Cardiff, a draw with Wigan and last nights victory over Wycombe proves our capabilities. We still have a long way to go but it is a great start, we should not be afraid to enjoy the small successes, praise our club, support the management team, compliment our players and enjoy the misery we are inflicting on our doubters, who ever they may be. Loving the stats - things are definitely improving We still have that monkey on our backs though - we need to shake him off - I think it will take 2 more wins in the next 2 games and he'll be gone.
Met Nigel Pearson at Paulton Rovers and he said to myself and other City fans just outside the club house City will be surprising a few this season. No doubts here i'm going on that. City will be surprising a few.
Plenty on here that doubted Nige. unbelievable really the best manager to arrive at Ashton Gate since Alan Dicks. The man is going to take this club onwards and upwards.
I really hope so. We are overdue some success. We've had some 'nearly' moments over the years but never quite made it. I've said on other threads however; I'm not getting carried away. We've only won 2 league games so far and there's a lot of the season left. Assuming (and it's a huge assumption) that we keep playing as we have done for the past 2 games going forward, injuries will be our biggest risk. We haven't got a big squad and a couple of injuries to key players could piss on our parade big time.
A couple of losses and you will be pointing out which players need to go and the dross he got left with.. I think we all want him to be sucsessful and so far, it's probably our best run with him.. hopefully he's learning the players best attributes in creating the right balance and confidence is growing....I'm enjoying it, but won't get carried away until I see a consistancy... Blackpool up next, bit of a tester in my eyes......I have us down for a win!!!
I'd be over the moon with a point up there. Our last win at Blackpool was 0-1 in August 2008 with Steve Brooker scoring the only goal having come on as a sub for Dele Adebola. My Son and I went to Blackpool in 2002 and watched us lose 5-1, and we were 4-0 down at half time. It was a long and quiet drive home.
It's a results business RR, and Nige hasn't had the results for people not to question him so far. Hopefully, that tide is turning, but he has deserved the critiscm he has had thus far.
I was there. It was the first game of the season, it absolutely pissed it down and Bloomfield Road stand we were in had no roof. We all had to go and buy some embarrassing orange ponchos from the Blackpool FC shop to prevent us getting soaked! One end of their stadium wasn't build and there were a couple of ball-boys on duty to get the ball if it went out. Blackpool absolutely battered us but couldn't score. I can't remember who our keeper was but he should have been sent off for making a 'save' outside his box but the ref only gave him a yellow. Then Brooker came on and scored right at the end of the game. It was daylight robbery - there's no way we deserved a point, let alone 3!!!!
A PL side would have been a great draw finacially, but actually, the draw is very interesting. 7 all PL clashes, and 2 that feature sides from L1 & 2 playing each other means at least 2 teams from outside the top 2 divisions will be in the last 8, before any potential shocks. If we win and got one of them at home, suddenly we have a great shot at being in the Sem-Finals, at a time when most Prem teams will have players getting back from the World Cup, and be heavily involved in Europe, will be a good time for us smaller clubs to get one of the big teams. I get that, but he inherited a squad in the top 10 of the Championship for the previous few seasons and with his experience, should have done better, but he led us to consecutive very low finishes. Which, given his supposed pedigree and experience, are rightly seen as unacceptable. You wanted LJ out with a 9th-place finish ffs!
LJs football was sideways and backward football-i was bored stiff with it and many thousands were at the time. Two seasons of boring insipid football. My mate and his daughter did not renew as was the same with many others at the time.
I don’t think many of us, me included, realised just how bad a shape we were in. He’s a track record for doing well, just look at how Leicester fans want him back. Given time I think he’ll be successful here. The question for me was always, would we allow him that time.
