I think we have lost forever a great deterrent. Old fashioned community. When so many more adults knew each other locally, through attending pubs at the same time( because of limited hours) , more working locally in industry, and when church going was strong, then kids behaved because they had no idea which adults might know their parents - parents who would reprimand them. Good kids then grew up as good adults.
Our village in Lincolnshire is still like that <ok>

Envious!! Wish it could be like it was again. I’m sure there would be more happiness and contentment for young and old alike .
Same in a lot of the villages in Durham. The kids are better behaved here and a lot less aggressive than they're on Tyneside, where I'm from, for instance.

Yes , different places can be worlds apart. I grew up , left for 30 years and then returned to same place , so referencing it all to the changes here and what it’s become .

I see Truss is refusing to windfall tax energy companies. Pretty much congratulating them for their profits. The Tories are desperately out of touch with real life for many people. Even Sunak is only talking about helping the poorest. As a single parent I’m already thinking Christmas will be a write off this year and maybe worse.
I believe in private enterprise and open market competition, but the nation’s utilities should NEVER be privatised, another f*** up from Maggie f****** Thatcher

If you don’t have police and cameras people would still do it and many don’t cos they might kill someone or die themselves. If deterrents worked there’d be no crime. Deterrents / sentences have increased on carrying knives but more kids do it now than ever before. When a local kid gets killed and policing increases it reduces.
I guess that’s where I must be old fashioned in values and beliefs, if people keep on breaking the law ,then raise the level of deterrent to reasonable levels of control

The evidence though is that people offend based on desperation, impulsivity, ill health , social relationships or because they are not likely to be caught. So what’s the point in pretend deterrents ? It’s just politics. Invest more in intervention and less in media bullshit.

It applies to both desperation and social relationships. It’s patently clear that mentioning Rwanda has made ****e all difference. Why? Because it’s an idiotic senseless policy made by fools. Work with the French, and others, accept fair quotas, create the right systems. Spend a fortune on pretending to be nasty for the benefit of Daily Mail bigots when people are already here and blame the French? Senseless. It’s lapped up by half wits

So if you let them in and they fail as legal immigrants. Where do you send them? Your idea just let’s everyone stay.

Work with the French, aye good luck with that

Depends case by case. Some can’t go back to their home country, some can. Maybe another country they also have family. They are him and have a right to some choice. It’s not exporting cattle .

Surely if they are found to be illegal they don’t have a right to any choice.
They aren’t illegal. No humans are illegal. They should t be dehumanised for wanting a better life or wanting to be in a better safer place. They have a right to be born and a right to be alive. They’ve just breached the rules. They are people with thoughts, feelings and human rights enshrined in law. That’s as much law as parliamentary law for human beings. So you work with them to organise safe passage to safe place like a respectful, empathic human, not cuff them and send them to a place with questionable human rights where there was recently genocide and where we had an influx of legal migrants from. Your life and rights aren’t more important than any other humans.
