At least we know Citys real fans are highly embarrassed about all this.

After all they have been telling us for years how we are not a proper club for spending money ( that we made and earned ) and now they are doing it I am sure they wont be so hypocritical as to not have the same opinions.

Yeh thats what I would say in the situation aswell

Can I ask you, do City embarrass you at all just now? I mean I suspect like all old city fans you had plenty to say about united but now city are making a mockery of every fan they have are you one of the few city fans who stands by their morals and finds all this a little pathetic ( thinking you can buy anyone and do anything ).

I suppose its all you have really. Its highly unlikely any City fan will feel the joy of winning something earned.

After nearly three years of threatening to dislodge United from the lofty heights of the Premier League that they have dominated since its inception in the early 90's, city have finally backed up their off field 'noise' with the performance on the pitch and with a 6-1 score line they have thrown down the gauntlet to their detested rivals. Of course the citizens have had to spend big to create some parity between the two sides and if they are successful in claiming the league championship this season many United fans will be quick to point out that City have ‘brought’ the title in their opinions, however the Red Devils have been ‘buying’ the league title for years. Manchester United over the past 10-15 years have set the precedent for big money signings and big money salaries, just look at these statistics:

Year ....Manchester .......United Manchester City

98/99.... £27,750,000.............. £1,480,000
99/00.... £17,800,000 .............£7,450,000
00/01... .£0........................... £13,250,000
01/02.... £57,000,000.............. £32,700,000
02/03..... £29,050,000............ £10,250,000
03/04..... £53,350,000............ £9,800,000
04/05.... .£27,200,000............. £0
05/06..... £19,500,000............. £9,750,000
06/07 ....£.18,600,000 .............£2,400,000
07/08..... £61,750,000............. £45,820,000
08/09..... £35,750,000............. £127,700,000 (Abu Dhabi United Group takeover)
09/10......£21,000,000............ £125,000,000
10/11......£27,200,000............ £154,750,000
11/12...... £52,900,000........... £82,000,000

Total £421,650,000.............. £622,350,000

The figures clearly show that up until the Abu Dhabi United Group takeover city were significantly in United’s shadow both on and off the pitch. To obtain a squad capable of challenging their bitter rivals city needed to invest substantially to turn mediocrity into supremacy and this past Sunday was the culmination of three years, of mind blowing extravagance in the transfer market. However regardless of money a squad still needs to be built and Roberto Mancini has done an excellent job organising, gelling and galvanising this collection of highly talented players into a well oiled machine. I like many others had my doubts about the Italian when he first joined the citizens but this was partly due to the manner in which his predecessor Mark Hughes had been dispatched, but he has turned all those who doubted him into believers with a steely determination and tactical astuteness.

Perhaps one of the most selective articles I have ever seen Jack! For one thing it ignores the fact that around half of Utd's spending in that period has been generated by selling players, often ones like Beckham, Ronaldo, Pique, Rossi and Richardson who the club developed.

And it also conveniently ignores the fact that from 1991, when both clubs were around the same level (5th and 6th in Div 1), until 1998 City spend around £10 million more than Utd. But over that period, whilst Utd won four league titles and two doubles, City managed to get relegated. Twice. Kinda blows the whole "Utd's dominance was all about the money" argument out of the water...

Maybe but it doesn't mention the money you got from the PL and CL (but lets not get into that one again) and £27m would buy more than one world class player in 1998, today you would struggle to buy one.

True, but then success begets success. Back in 1991 both clubs were at the same level, with the same financial resources and the same chance of success. Over the next seven years City spent more money but Utd achieved the success and went on to become a big club whilst City dropped largely into footballing and financial obscurity. That wasn't due to the money.

After that, yes I grant you the money was a factor in our sustained success, as it has been for Arsenal and Liverpool over the same period. But that was money that came to us, as to all successful clubs, due to our earlier track record. And remember that some of our most successful players have been the ones like Giggs, Scholes, Neville, Beckham, Schmeichel, Cantona, Vidic, Evra and Ronaldo who cost very little in relative terms at the time, whilst some of the big money signings like Barthez, Saha, Hargreaves, Carrick, Veron and Berbatov have been the more disappointing ones. Similarly for City now - Hart and Kompany have been as important as anyone barring Silva, and certainly more important that some of the big money buys like Lescott, Dzeko, Toure and even Tevez in my opinion.
