The problem with Gareth is he genuinely is a bit rubbish. In the same way that Bruce is rubbish. They think football is all about arms round shoulders, then when there's the slightest bit of criticism they'll start to do odd things with player positions and formations just to prove they know best. That's where the failures become more constant; the further they get from consistent tactics, the worse it gets. But unlike club management, which ends in the sack, it's different for Gareth. He's not going anywhere. The FA are as incompetent as the manager they picked, he's a product of their system, ingrained in their mentality and has a lot of mates there.
Besides all this, what do we really think should be happening? Semi finals, even finalists, is the very best we should expect - we're certainly not the best nation in the world so regardless of luck getting to these latter stages is over-achieving. I'm not even sure anyone else could do better; you've still got the same issues of English players at bigger clubs being propped up by talented foreigners. Is Stones, or Sterling, or Grealish the reason City won the league?! Is it ****, it's KDB, Rodri, Diaz, Silva, etc. Same with Liverpool, Henderson's decent enough midfielder but he's not the reason they're getting to a UCL final.
Final point - who ****ing cares? International football is boring af.
