1990 World Cup being remembered fondly as a classic tournament when in fact the standard of football was dire

i would have thought the best way to try to get a country to change it's ways would be to make sure it could not 'join in' and be ignored by as many as possible, simply bowing down and taking their money just allows them to continue doing as they wish.

Yeah, it's just openly corrupt and it makes it look like all the kneeling, the speaking and the campaigning over the last couple of years has been nothing but virtue signalling.

I always think of Nesun Dorma first when I think of that world cup. It is the only one I can remember the song from. I did like Roberto Baggio though, but tend to agree overall.

USA 94 was a good one I thought. A hristo sroichkov inspired Bulgaria were great to watch and Romario was a player I could watch all day.

always been of the opinion if you are going to commit to something then you commit to it, players wanting to go to the world cup this year or players wanting to sign for the mags now after all the kneeling and all the public statements about racism and discrimination and the need to fight it at every turn, that all changes when enough money ( and a free holiday for the family, basically) is flashed, to me that makes all the hard work that many have done a complete waste of time as people see these 'icons' as accepting that discrimination, so the hard work has to start all over again.

this was actually a damn good opportunity for best part of the world to make a massive stand, should have got together and arranged some alternative games or simply not disrupted their normal seasons and refused to play...i can remember the USA wanting to change the games to 4 quarters with bigger goals and they got told straight.

It's never the big teams that I'm interested in watching in the group stages (England aside). It's those cross continent group games where you're not really sure who's better. The below are potential classics with those in bold my favourite choices.

    USA vs Wales
    Mexico vs Poland
    Morocco vs Croatia
    Switzerland vs Cameroon
    Uruguay vs South Korea

Aye, great tournament that. First time I managed to complete the panini album. Enzo Scifo sticks out to me, alongside Stoichkov, when I think about that tournament.

It is funny. I have obvious fond memories of 1990 and thought 94 was ****e, mainly as the final was so poor. But, you could the exciting games of 1990 on one hand whereas there were some very decent games in 94.

for those of a certain vintage the 1970 world cup was outstanding, In Brazil possibly the best team ever to grace a football field

My dad raves about them and having watched a stupid amount of their games on you tube, I have to say they were pretty bloody good
