Not particularly defending the Tories, but I believe this levy is slightly different to a straight forward tax on profits, ensuring investment going forward.
if only people would stop buying takeaways, charging/buying their iphones and watching tv all day they might get a job and be able to pay for their bills rather than putting more tax on us all...
Why does the tax year start on 6th April? I retired from my regular employment on 31st March 2020 and have been working on a self-employed basis since. I duly completed a self-assessment return for 2020-21 and paid the requisite tax (something that some of my friends think I was mad to do). I've now been notified that I've been fined £100 for not completing a self-assessment return for the year 2019-20, a period when I was 100% PAYE. Of course I 'phoned HMRC to complain about this (absolute torture getting through), only to be told that, as I'd stated on my 20-21 return that my self employment started on 1st April 2020, I had to declare my earnings for the first 5 days of April. I explained that all of my earnings in April 2020 were included in my 20-21 return, but to no avail. What a load of bollocks.
Good ol Boris has just changed the Minesterial code to suit himself. This alone sums up the man. Hes an absolute ****er, intent on staying in his job to rape the country as much as possible for himself and those he bows to. What a ****ing shambles he is making of the UK but i suppose its what we voted for.
He knows he's going to be found to have lied to the House, so changes the rules to avoid being forced to resign. Still, he got Brexit done, that's all that matters.
Oh **** just found out Tommeh ten names lives a couple of villages over from me… must be tough getting persecuted in an affluent area of Herts… wonder if his house is in his wife’s name.
Interesting argument on Broadcasting House this morning by Peter Hitchens (who doesn’t do levity). Because other ‘more serious’ instances of government dishonesty might not in his opinion have been investigated quite as thoroughly as Partygate (his target is the Blair government), we should now forget about Partygate. Another guest pointed out that although the details of Partygate are banal, the core issue of ongoing dishonesty and lying, isn’t. Hitchens responded by saying he doesn’t support Johnson. Like he doesn’t support Putin. Odd, for a man who’s self professed Christian Conservatism/ Anglo Guallism (a code for social conservatism) would seem to be hot on absolute morals as well as hierarchies. It seems he believes lying about some things is a lesser sin than lying about others.

How did this happen with an 80 majority? Which bit went wrong the most? Even so, I can't imagine why people would vote for this Labour Party.
Question is, if Labour sell themselves to the electorate as the Not Boris Johson party, how well will they do?
Thinks getting worse for Johnson. Surprising really, you'd have thought the prospect of returning to Imperial measures would really bring the country together. It'll be the death penalty next.
That wouldn’t surprise me, not much would with Johnson. His own ethics advisor is threatening to go for Johnson’s lack of any ethics at all.
