Again though, Lancs followed us in showing what can be done against an older ball and lesser (or tired) bowlers. It might be worth promoting Brown or Organ up the order, in the hope that they might be able to protect Vince and Dawson until deeper into the innings? (Not that it will ever happen - just not the sort of thing you tend to see.)

Organ would be the one for me if we did do that. Brown is the more attack minded of the two.

WTF?!

When you consider the LBW appeals which have been turned down in this match, to give that one...

Vince has every right to be livid. Even Jimmy quickly gave up his appeal.

And now they're back to not giving anything. Christ Gubbins is lucky.

Oh dear Essex. <laugh>

Feels like a total waste for them to have recruited Steketee as their second overseas player, when it means that Porter gets left out of the XI. Surely would have been far more logical to recruit an overseas batter, and play Porter.

They've lost Bopara and RTD in the last few years (and Foster not long before that). That's a heck of a lot of batting experience gone. And although they can't do anything about Lawrence's current injury, losing him to the test team for part of the season was always a risk. Rossington and Critchley are good, but it really feels like they missed a trick by not getting an experienced overseas batter.

Decent day all in all for Hants. Could have been a fantastic day had Joe held on to one of those catches. Pleased to be only 3 down at stumps though. With an aging ball and a deep batting line up we could really set Lancs a stiff target.

That should be the hardest part now done. Best part of 30 overs to hopefully now cash in either side of lunch.

At no point during the first two days did I ever see this finishing a draw. And yet it's arguably the favourite result now (albeit all results are very much possible).

Do I see crocodile tears??

So Weatherley has broken his hand, presumably whilst dropping one of those 2 slip chances against Lancs. Donald has been brought into the squad as his replacement.

My vote would be for Organ to open and Donald to slot in at 7, to avoid moving Dawson and Brown around the order as well. Unless they decide to bring Currie in for Fuller then I guess that also means that Holland will be a permanent fixture in the slip cordon (at 3rd) for the foreseeable future.
