For him to do some time, his girlfriend would need to stand up in court and corroborate these allegations, surely?

She's not even made the complaint herself, they are investigating this on the basis of an Instagram post, the content of which is ambiguous at best.

Completely agree he should not come back to United, but I can't see him ever being found guilty of anything.
With the appalling state , in particular in relation to sexual offences , of our criminal justice system Greenwoods contract will be up before any decision is made .

Im not certain mate but I'm sure the cps can charge him without her if they feel the case is winnable.

Seeing how high profile he is making an example of him and domestic violence may be the motive for them.

It's a shame they did **** all about the likes of Gazza and Stan Collymore then, this could have been prevented.

Or does Gazza get off scott free because he's a stupid jovial geordie we're all supposed to love?

Back then it was fine smacking yer missus about.

Nowadays in the age of "my rights" not so much.

Collymore especially. He really beat the utter crap out of Ulrika. Lots of lads mags and internet chatter at the time still gave him a free pass because, well she's a mardy cow, like, so she sort of deserved it. Apalling even by the standards of 20 years ago.

I think they changed the rules on consensual witnesses for domestic violence and hate crimes about a decade ago. Could be wrong, but I'm sure I read that if the evidence is there (the tape, in this case), they don't need the victim to verify it, or even to attempt to refute it. They could say it was an agreed sex game or something, but considering she posted it on social media saying the exact opposite.... well, he'd better hope that United's lawyers select the jury, I suppose. :emoticon-0112-wonde

I think in the UK it was still not illegal to rape your wife as late as the late 80's or early 90's. (Marriage gave consent) I remember that law changing when I was a young-un and being surprised that had been legal.

Ok. Googled. 1991 was the first court case of a husband found guilty of raping his wife, previously it was considered consent just being married... But it wasn't until 2003 it was actually formally written into law.

That's pretty crazy imo that it took that long.

In fact, wasn't that the thing that going on with Caroline Flack? Her boyf was persuaded/cajoled into saying she hadn't hit him with a lamp and split his head open after all (even though they had a recording of him and her saying just that to the paramedics), but the DPP wouldn't let it drop, even with him as a hostile witness, as they had all the evidence to put in front of a jury, and they had a zero-tolerance strategy? And she was a woman - Mason's got less chance than she had that they'll drop it. :emoticon-0138-think

Yeah, that happened to my sister in '78 with her now-deceased ex. We thought the cops were telling us a bad-taste joke when they explained the then law. He did her in front of the crying kids too. Scum.
