So you realised what I was talking about and either missed the point or deliberately chose to ignore it. They are not punished the same. Look we disagree. I’d rather draw a line under it since I don’t think you can convince me to align with your views on this. And that is ok. Alternative takes can be interesting
What is the symbol supposed to be on the armband ? Just a generic one or something else? I’d have thought it should be a “£” sign or something
Oh. So very on the nose then! Saw on Twitter people comparing this to the nazi plan to send Jews to Madagascar Not exactly the same as they had that planned for Jews who with German citizens. Not a great deal better mind It’s up there with Australia though. Although probably not as bad come to think of it - assuming they can actually settle in Rwanda and are not deported from there by the authorities and dumped somewhere across one of those borders. Clearly not high on their list but not a prison island
The whole idea is disgraceful, disgusting, and brings shame to this country. Apart from the similarities to the Nazi plan, the point missed by a lot of people is that it will make absolutely zero difference to the people traffickers who will continue to treat those poor refugees like **** while they exploit them.
I guess the theory is that people won’t want to flee to Britain if they know they will just be shipped to Africa ? But surely that relies on them all being caught? And also these people are desperate anyway Another gross part is that I believe they are trying to paint this as “we want to help these people by stopping the ship crossings where so many drown”. As if it is out of kindness when it clearly isn’t
The problem is that this isn't a difference of opinion, you're just factually incorrect. Attempted bank robbery is literally charged and punished exactly the same as bank robbery. Murder is one of the few charges where there is a different charge between "tried" and "succeeded". If you want to see this in action, look at Michael Avenatti. He was charged with extortion and honest services fraud for trying to extort Nike. Note the 'trying': he never received any money. Never had a hope in hell of receiving any money, because the first thing Nike did after he tried to extort them was to call the FBI. His sentencing was based on the $25m he tried to get them to pay him, not the $0 he received. Nowhere in his sentencing was that even mentioned as a reason for a downward departure from guidelines, because it isn't a thing that gets considered.
Fine I was wrong on that - doesn’t change my overall opinion though. Of the whole discussion topic. Which is what I was referring to with regards to drawing a line on it You aren’t going to convince me to change my original opinion. Hence - drawing a line. But wanted to acknowledge I was mostly wrong on that area of fact
I keep thinking that if Boris has decided to deport these immigrants to Rwanda thirty years ago this would have made him culpable of homicide. The whole thing seems so far-fetched that I cannot believe that this willactually get through parliament and actually happen. Regardles of the fact that the morality of this is something that we would normally criticise someone like Putin for, the financial cost makes not sense. I am staggered that the government has even mooted the idea of Rwanda. Apparently there is support for this amngst the Conservative party members and it will no doubt play well with Daily Mail readers. I cannot see any government prior to Johnson's making such a cruel decision. Anyone who is right in the mind will see this proposal as nothing less than abhorent.
Having lived and worked in Gabon mid nineties I can say that the culture shock for many sent to Rwanda for 'processing' (a chilling word) and possible resettlement will more than struggle physically and mentally. Besides that there is the questionable human rights record with a number of alleged offences being investigated. The inhumanity further diminishes the UK standing internationally. The cost alone given the problems of millions needing support is an appalling waste. Other posts on here highlight the drastic cuts in funds to replace EU grants. As ever those who are least able to pay bear the brunt of the costs.
The principle is wrong but making te destination Rwanda could not be worse. They do not have a great human rights record at the moment. I would be intresting to read waht the Foreign Office's own travel recommendations say about Rwanda! This will become a legal minefield for the government and I am 100% convinced it will never get inacted. The fact that it was even suggested is indicative how ridiculous this current government is. The comparison with Denmark is misleading as they have a far smaller population.
i agree with you Ian in all except they are not immigrants, they are asylum seekers. IMO completely different and a lot worse to send off.
I don't make a comparison to Denmark and it's difficult to find out if their agreement made in May last year has resulted in anyone being sent to Rwanda. My comment was on the repeated lie that brexshit 'freedom' enabled the UK deal. Another attempt to glorify the bollocks that is brexshit.
I agree with most of this but the first sentence doesn’t make sense. This isn’t 30 years ago and there is reason to believe that it it were this country wouldn’t be picked. Just like how we are not sending people to Ukraine, Syria etc I’m not going to pretend to know what Rwanda is like now. But don’t they have adverts during football matches and some kind of arsenal link? Visit Rwanda? I'd take that to mean things aren’t quite the same edit : replied before getting to the end of the posts. And actually considering that the visit Rwanda is tourism and not living and settling there. And could be sports washing - albeit from a much poorer regime than the Saudis
Once Boris has been removed, I am sure Brexit will be reversed. The EU seem t have got their act together with Ukraine and it is pretty clear that there are no advanatges whatsoever with Brexit. No one in their right mind would vote for Brexit now that the implications are all too clear. The one thing that had struck me about Brexit and the impact on the united Kingdom was that the logic has been the reverse of what it should have been. I cannot see why, with all the fiasco regarding Northern Ireland, Wales suffering economically and with Scotland incensed that they are no longer in the EU, the simplest solution would have been for the UK to remain in the EU but England to leave the UK. I am surprised that no one has thought of that. england would have got what it wanted and the remainder of the UK would not be suffering the consequences of people whose nationalism was so extensive that they were happy enough to cut their nose off to spite their face.
