We are
10 points of a definate European spot
4 points of a probable European Spot
3 points of a possible European spot

Even if we don't make it i'm more than happy with how this seasons gone

Sunderland are two ahead. We're on 35, they're on 37.

So did I Secret Ingredient, Gutted when we didn't push him forward. Did you see his volley when Williamson was offside? He almost put Foster into the back of the net.

I heard the whistle for offside, and you could clearly see that Willow was off, but i still jumped when Colo hit it! What a strike! Had to have hurt Foster that one...

Two more wins should see us safe. Then we can start looking at how high we can finish.

For me, this season has already been so much better than I expected.

I thought that we would be in the bottom 6 all season and would be sweating right up to the final day. 17th would always be good enough for me. I expected the mackems to beat us in the derby games and couldn't see us doing better than getting 2 draws from those matches.

The only real downer this season has been the sacking of Chris Hughton. I thought that the board really treated him badly. However, Alan Pardew has come in and seems to be doing an excellent job. Even the sale of Andy Carroll could have a positive ending if Ashley does allow the money to be spent on players.

To finish in a european spot is a massive ask, but not impossible, and I wonder how this would affect Mike Ashley's thinking if we managed to achieve it, and to finish above the Mackems after all their bollocks about "top team in the NE" and "6 easy points" would finally destroy my bladder.

I would normally be very, very optimistic about our club's future in a situation like this, but with Mike Ashley owning the club you never know what is coming next. But SURELY, if the club was to qualify for Europe he would allow Pardew to build on this season and take the club forward?

IF we do get into a European spot come the end of the season, surely this would force the hand of Fat Mike to loosen the purse strings to bring in players.
Also I think it would help us to hold on to players such as Enrique and Tiote to push on.

Though I think Europe would be to much to soon, it can have it's positives.

That would be a hell of a turn around from being relegated smashing the championship league then getting a european spot. Has a team ever done that?

I think Europe is a little too much this season, with Liverpool seemingly starting to get things together (Wigan aside) they will occupy 6th for the rest of the season IMO. Then it's very unlikely that 7th would be a European place but I can definately see us finishing top 10... so you never know <ok>

1) I don't think 40 points will guarantee safety. I think goal difference will determine who is relegated this year. I don't think we'll be in the mix.

2) Some of the teams around us have fairly decent run-ins, I don't think we'll be any higher than 9th come the end of the season

3) The likeliness of 7th place = Europe is pretty slim. I think it'll be 1st-4th Champs League (Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City) and 5th & 6th Europa (Spurs, Liverpool)

Europe is possible, think it will go down to 7th personally, think the main two teams could end up being us and the mackems, though Bolton and Stoke might have something to say about that.
