How is ex-Bristol City manager Lee Johnson getting on at the moment? There were plenty of high points in the Lee Johnson Bristol City era and you could understand if at times this season some Robins supporters were wishing they were back in it. A former player and son of much-loved ex-manager Gary Johnson, the 40-year-old took charge after the sacking of Steve Cotterill in February 2016 and lasted a little more than four years at the helm – helping City grow into a well-established Championship side without ever reaching the top six. He wouldn’t have to wait too long for another EFL job, parting ways with the Robins in July 2020 and replacing Phil Parkinson at Sunderland in December of that same year. Things started positively for Johnson at the Stadium of Light and he got his hands on some silverware in the form of the EFL Trophy in March 2021, but his debut campaign with the Black Cats would ultimately end sourly as Sunderland were knocked out of the League One play-offs at the semi-final stage by Lincoln City. But with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ takeover ending the Stewart Donald era (so we all thought), there was positivity heading into the new season and Sunderland made a strong start to their latest promotion push. They were battling for an automatic promotion place for the first half of the season and recovered from a rocky patch in October but a run of just one win in five games in January 2022 would spell the end of Johnson’s tenure. The former City coach was dismissed on the back of a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers – with Alex Neil eventually appointed in his place. Though his Sunderland tenure ended abruptly, the English coach has plenty of positive words to say about his time at the North East club. Speaking on BBC Football Daily 72+ podcast recently, he reflected on his departure and his time with the Black Cats. Johnson said: “No, I don’t think [the sacking] was a shock, if I’m honest. First and foremost, I absolutely loved my time there, brilliant, brilliant club. “I’m privileged to have managed such an iconic club, I felt I connected with the fans right from the start, understood what they wanted, we really tried to implement that and I think we generally did. “We had a stellar home record in my time there and a big part of that was definitely down to the fans, their passion, intimidation and everything that goes with 34,000 plus [fans] in League One on a regular basis. “Did I see it coming? Listen, there’s always bits and bobs behind the scenes that are not quite right. “A football manager and a club is a bit like a marriage and, as much as I loved the club and the people there, we were sort of moving in slightly different directions in terms of principles and decision making on how we see the way forward.” You’d imagine that it won’t be long before we see a forward-thinking coach like Johnson back in EFL management. https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/h...manager-lee-johnson-getting-on-at-the-moment/
Managed Oldham, Barnsley, Bristol City & Sunderland, 4 jobs in 9 years, won a mickey mouse cup but nothing else, he is now an unemployed ex 3rd tier coach, in my opinion nothing special but good luck to hin.
Im told LJ is a very rich man with a huge portfolio of houses. Can anyone verify that ? He doesn't need money. I would really like him to take on the Yeovil job, they don't even have a board of directors and only 1 player on contract for next season. They are in dire straights down there and need serious help. Come on Lee, you are still revered in Yeovil, give something back to those who made you player of the year 3 seasons running.
I don't know any of the Johnsons personally, but I get the feeling that Lee wants to emulate his dad's success as a manager. He certainly doesn't need money if the property portfolio rumour is true, so he must be driven by personal ambition rather than greed. Gary is an absolute legend. Lee has a long way to go to get anywhere near that status, but until/unless he does he will remain forever in his father's shadow.
It's a Shame, after being the most successful manager we'd had since Alan Dicks.....But progress was required and I'm just working out how well that's going..
I heard a rumour that SL is lining him up to come back and replace Nigel Pearson as he now realises what a good thing we had before...
when you sacked as a manager with time on your contract you wont be skint! Lee is quite a savvy person, people sometimes get the wrong end of the stick with members of the population that are actually successful ... maybe a tad of jealousy taints the picture.? He is known to have a pretty tidy property empire... maybe empire not quite the right word! ... maybe expanding portfolio! He does has some modern day day forward thinking ideas, again goes against the grain of some lesser mortals that are unable to understand/ keep up/ able to see how they can be connected to football etc! .. football over the past decade has made massive jumps... likely a jump equal to the previous 3 decades. Sunderland were 2nd / 3rd when Lee departed now 7th had points in hand over the next 7 or 8 teams. they are now part of 6 [ maybe 7 ] teams chasing 5th and 6th positions in the play off's..... now after 10 games advanced by just 13 points. Thats 1.3 points a game v Lee's 1.87 .. football is a funny old game after 46 games is what counts... teams hit poor patch's and purple patch's.. said it many times before ... how often do managers get sacked before a period that looks like easier games!!! gives the new man [ hopefully ] a flying start .. how many times does it fail? in CITY'S SEASON 2015/16 we finished 18th [ part SC ] on 52 points 31pts from SC IN 30 games 21 from LJ in 16 ..... Season 2016/17 =17th on 54 points Now bearing in mind there has been a dramatic increase/ change in staff [ playing ] regards to "better quality" a point noted by NP when he was in his first 30 games [ where at 1 point got rid of 16 ] we have since failed!!! Other than the 3 that came up or down the remaining 18 teams have had the same conditions to play with ... money wise/ player wise ... 6 -7 years or so ago quite a few of the high flying managers that " on here peeps said" top of the pile thats who we need have failed .... in todays game... the odd one or 2 like dame nellie! has had the charisma to work wonders over a season or ..... question is where would you place NP? .. on paper take out Leicester and what is left? .... is he outdated bit like a 2010 nokia compared to a samsung s5 ? .. I note that both Plymouth and Carlisle are doing very well over the past 6 or 7 games!
We have very different ideas on enjoyable then. I can count on one finger the enjoyable games under NP.....
Lies, damned lies and statistics - said somebody once upon a time. His management legacy - from memory Presided over the longest continuous spell for BCFC in the top 2 divisions since Alan Dicks Sacked for failing to gain Premiership status with BCFC within his 5 year timescale. Improved BCFCs league position over successive seasons whilst he was employed at Bristol City Left every club he has managed in a higher league position than they were when he was appointed Part of the BCFC management regime which spent more money than ever before in the history of the club on players Part of the BCFC management regime which MADE more money on player sales than ever before in the history of the club Presided over the longest losing streak in the history of BCFC Presided over the biggest crowds at Ashton Gate since all-seating was introduced Presided over the best major cup run for Bristol City, taking the most number of Premiership scalps, that I personally can remember BCFC saw more of their matches televised than ever before in the history of the club during his tenure, meaning that he presided over the highest TV income ever.. Guided BCFC out of the relegation zone they were in when he took over - to which they would never return during his tenure. Conducted some of the most irritating press interviews, full of corporate buzzwords and phrases No promotions on his CV No relegations on his CV The fans were/are split in their opinions about him People from both sides of the LJ debate will pick out some from the above legacy and conveniently disregard/dismiss the rest, according to their personal agenda with the bloke.
So tell me what was enjoyable watching LJ and then Holdens team-they played sideways and backwards football with no intent on getting forward.it was mind numbing. The football under NP is so much more attacking and quicker and enjoyable on the eye. Not being funny the football is chalk and cheese. NP has got fans expecting things to happen under the previous two it was a case of fans shouting forward forward forward.
I agree under Holden, bar the first 4 games. I don't agree under LJ, maybe at the end, yes, but the 2-3 years before that we were very exciting and attacking
Perhaps it’s just me, but I really enjoyed our cup run and I thought we played some really good stuff back then
