Agree mate although I've never seen Tears of the Sun. I remember at school studying 2 different poems on the Charge of the Light Brigade. One by Causley and one by Betjamin. One glorifying the tragedy and the other showing the brutality of it. Always stuck with me that.

    Oh please!

    Hamburger Hill! Really!

Actually watching, no lie, Black Hawk down right now.

What a film and what an ensemble cast!

Still, Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our fathers are the go to war films to watch.

    Both are fantastic.

I have watched Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of my Fathers, they were great films

Hamburger Hill was a true story where 3 Companies of American soldiers were wasted capturing a hill with no tactical value, the actual film was about the last Company to attack the NVA and out of 125 men there were a handful that were not killed or wounded, which was my point

Hacksaw Ridge was a true story and the casualty rate was as high as in Hamburger Hill

The two best/effective anti war films in my opinion were the original All Quiet on the Western Front and Paths of Glory which concentrated of the total futility of war and the total disregard for human life in the First World War

Path of Glory was a true story where 10% of the survivors of a failed attempt by the French to retake Verdun were executed for cowardice in an attemp to encourage the next attack to succeed

    And all fairly accurately <ok>

Black Hawk Down is largely a fabrication of actual events, but Aldo's only interested in the film making.

Just tell him to fck off, Duggie <whistle>

Paths of Glory btw, excellent film, very underrated.

The Responder was decent. Set in Liverpool. 5 episodes about a bent cop.

I've always rated Black Hawk Down and feel that it's under appreciated. Ewan McGregor almost ****s it up though with a terrible performance and accent.

So to be a good war film it has to be based on true events is that what your saying. In that case every film about Vietnam is based on true events and Hamburger hill wouldn't be in the top 10 films about Vietnam. Not mine anyway. It's not that good a film.

As for the rest of your long winded rant...Paths of glory would be in my top ten war movies. Battle of Algiers and Gallipoli would probably be there too. Hacksaw Ridge wouldn't but it is a far superior movie to Hamburger Hill tbf.

If it's a film about the horrors of war you're wanting then I suggest you watch Come and see.

Every war movie ever made (apart from real footage documentary) are fabrications of real events. Even the great ones of which Hamburger Hill isn't one.

If you want realism based on actual events watch Lone Survivor. That battle down the mountain is a painful watch.

Humanity and morality is removed in basic training, that's what it's for.

Obey every command without question, kill or be killed

Problem is the ones that make the most effective killing machines can't always fit back in to normal society and those that see their mates killed while they survive always live with the guilt that comes with that

I'll tell you a far superior war movie that also has a hill in it.

    The Hill

    Excellent movie.

    Big 9/10 from me.

I'm not that keen on McGregor tbh. His career highlight thus far was trainspotting and it's went all down hill from there.

Yes. Clint Eastwood directed them. They tell the same story for both perspectives. Brilliant Cinema.

Controversial I know but I'd say both are better than Saving Private Ryan and I really rate SPR. In fact I watched it again for the 20oddth time last week.
