The point is what are you supposed to do if you want something better than what is offered? Say someone wants an Armani overcoat as an example. Do you expect someone to buy one from Top man instead as nowhere in Hull sells Armani? I don't think I've ever had a partner who didn't buy makeup whenever we went to leeds, London or Manchester because they couldn't get what they wanted in Hull. And if they're buying that from elsewhere they might as well have a look in Topshop or Zara while they're there.

Well if you really want to go in an actual Armani store and buy an overcoat then you'd have to go somewhere else (somewhere further than Leeds too as they don't have one, although notably Glasgow does...)
There will be shops in Hull that sell some Armani clothing (even JD and Sports Direct do), although maybe not overcoats.
Shops will go where the need is. If the need is here they'll come, if it isn't they won't. That's presumably why they all want you to sign up to loyalty cards so they know where their buyers are.

We're northerners, what the **** do we want with these 'overcoat' things you mention?

That's why I don't know whether anywhere in Hull sells them...

Sadly,it's plummeted downhill badly in the last 5 or 6 years..Buchanan St is probably much the same as your last visit but Argyle St and Sauchiehall St have sunk to new depths.

They recently spent in excess of 7 million on Sauchiehall St as part of a regeneration project, the Street then suffered 2 huge blazes, football fell due to diversions and shops have closed up both sides.

I can well believe it's not as good as it used to be, as are a lot of city centre shopping areas. But Sauchiehall St and Buchanan St are still miles ahead of Whitefriargate, and Buchanan Galleries ahead of Princes Quay/St Stephens.

Before you ask, my last visit was Dec 2019.

Likewise if you walk down Whitefriargate next time you're in Hull.

It's not a race to the bottom - there's plenty of buildings in Hull that look similar. Google tells me that Sauchiehall St still has a Boots and an M&S, so it's ahead of Whitefriargate on those terms alone.

Look, there's no bloody comparison between Hull and Glasgow. The most aspirational shop we have in Hull is a bloody Superdry. No middle class staples like M&S or John Lewis. Beverley is where the folk with any money go if they're not heading out to Leeds, York or Meadowhell, at least it has most of the High Street usuals, some nice independents and even a tiny department store.

It's amazing how much effort some people will go to to 'prove' Hull is ****, when in reality, it's suffering in a similar way to many places, and has an awful lot of great things that are pretty much unique to us.

Perhaps if the naysayers put as much effort into looking at the good aspects of the city, and defending it with a sense of realism and pride, it may just make it more attractive to inward investment.

I'm Hull, and I'm proud of it.

    Exactly,I'm a Hull lad,not a Glaswegian(hence the reason I'm having a dig at the state of Glasgow).

My wife is a Glaswegian though and has been for 61 years, she thinks Glasgow City Centre has declined massively in the last 5 or 6 years.Weirdly enough I brought her down with me last time and she went shopping in Hull...She liked it!!

Maybe it's just being somewhere different and it's a pointless comparison.?
