i can pretty much guarantee the club did not really think about selling pickford or henderson at the time but those bids could not be refused at the time...if a big enough bid comes in any player will go, only the top six can really hope to hold onto players and only then if they keep getting european football and even then with figures of 100M floating around no one is going to put 'loyalty' first. would love to see us develop our own players who see us back to the top flight but i feel almost the whole squad will change on the way...which of course, it should do as experience will be required.
Pretty sure Henderson was being touted about for a good 12 months before he went, the club saw him as a way to get a bit of money in. And on relegation there is no way they weren't waiting for the biggest bid for Pickford. I just hope the new regime see promotion and developing the lad for another few years as more of a profit in the future. If it was still Donald he would be driving him across to Burnley right now.
yeh, my badly made point was that they were 'home grown' lads who wanted to stay and play for the club...but money talks so we can never say never.
Aye I agree neither of those lads would have been pushing for moves. Both were Sunderland through and through.
I cant see it myself. I think Johnson and Speakman are clever enough to warn the owners about selling the crowm jewel. I cant believe Dan will jump at the first chance. I also really doubt a prem club will make a move in January for a league 1 player. Imagine their fans reaction, if they are anytjing like us when we sign someone from league 2
They could have my season ticket back as there would be no way we would be getting out of this league in a hurry. we need to keep hold of players like Neil if we are to get back to where we want to be.
As has been said... every player has his price and if a big enough offer comes in then I'd hope we'd insist on him being loaned straight back to us until the end of the season. Nobody could realistically expect the club to reject an offer of 12m plus.
I have a different view. ****e as it is at some point it’s likely we’ll lose him. I don’t think we’ll win this then the championship and that’s maybe our only hope. We need to get maximum possible amount but the difference between this and previous regimes has to be recruiting well and being ahead of the game. If we got 3 million and got 3 Cirkins, a Broadhead and a Winchester to add yeti our squad we’d undoubtedly be stronger. We’re just used to **** recruitment abd noney wasting. If we get the recruitment right we’ll have the next Neil settled in and ready to play well when asked. If we haven’t we shouldn’t sell until we’re ahead of the game. Which is why I think he’ll not go this window.
What makes you think at some point we will lose him? He’s shown very promising signs, but no where near prem quality yet, and he would need to test himself in the championship first. He didn’t stand out against Arsenal which is fine because he’s still a youngster learning his trade, the only one who did was Pritchard, a fantastic performance. If we’ve got any kind of aspirations, he should not be sold at any price. We need to get back to the premier league, selling our best players won’t get us there.
Don't agree, mate. Every player has his price. If somebody bids 20 million for Dan, you wouldn't expect us to turn that down, surely?
20 mil isn’t realistic to be fair, but I would take it. But to be honest, I wouldn’t want us to take anything less, not because he’s worth that much, because selling our prized youngsters to Burnley is not called progression.
What is needed is a firm statement by the club saying our young players who have signed long term contracts are simply NOT FOR SALE.....no ambiguity, We need to let clubs know if they think they can cherry pick our young talent...then they can go f uck themselves....How are we supposed to progress when we lose our most promising players.
Because we’re in league one. That’s where he would probably loaned to at the moment anyway so he may as well stay, if we go up I’d say the same next year he’d probably want experience in the championship. After that I think he’ll be gone unless we win that. Just being a realist- money and ambition will talk. If we’ve got aspirations it isn’t as simple as don’t sell, it’s don’t sell at the wrong time, but it’s also reinvest and improve.
He’s no where near premier league level at the moment, so I wouldn’t consider him gone no matter what league we are in!
I know 20 million isn't realistic but I was replying to you saying he shouldn't be sold at any price... KLD has already stated we need to be self-sufficient. I took that as buying low, selling high and then reinvesting that into the team. Academy players are all profit so I fully expect them to be sold from time to time. If we could get 12-15 million for Dan, we could buy a good few decent players for that to make the team/squad stronger. I'm not bothered who we sell too if the price is right. If Burnley offer 20 million should we say no because that wouldn't be progression?
Sure Pickford wanted to stay for one more season too, if he had he would have stood out unbelievably in the championship how crap we were, would we have gpt £50m if he stopped & developed another year? we wouldnt have got lee camp, apologies for bringing him up at this festive time, camp cost us points, maybe we would jave gone down? I agree, develope this lad for as lomg as we can, has a new contract, wants to stay, if he develops as he should he will leave at some point but we max our income, umderstand a decent bid may come in & that lets us bring a few more in but we donr want to be selling kids to early
