After my heart attack I don't smoke anymore and can't drink anymore. This doesn't stop me going into pubs or meeting up with friends who smoke, i'm lucky that way. That's why I started having a flutter on the football now I can afford it.
I understand the concerns about someone's betting maybe getting out of hand so i'll go along with the mods decision.

thats not a bad idea , i get the concern i just find it strange how this thread has suddenly caused it, im sure there has been threads on Gin and favourite beers before and nobody said anything about those , as DMD eluded too earlier there are adverts everywhere for it now , you cant escape it, i very much doubht a thread on here is going too tip people over the edge, and like you say there is a mental health thread if people want too talk about it.

I don't disagree, and I appreciate your points.

It's quite possible I'm overthinking this and looking at for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, but I seem to recall other gambling related threads caused some concerns, so I was really trying to see what others thought, and if there was a way of reducing those concerns to keep the majority happy.

As someone pointed out up thread, we are a community after all.

when i was younger looking back, i think i was close to being a addict of some sorts, i did some stupid stuff.

i once withdrew 500 quid on my credit card to back chelsea to beat sunderand @ 1/5 i basically wanted to buy 100 quid , they won with an 80th minute deflected goal- very lucky..... i did somethig similar with England against Northern Ireland and they lost , and let me be clear ive never been in a job i can afford to lose that much easily, luckily still lived at home without responsibilty i ruined my first holiday with my now wife as i lost 20 quid on the lunchtime game, so put 30 on an acca, it lost, i then was betting on italian games to win it back, i lost about 300 quid and spent all holiday on my phone making bets and watching live scores , looking back i recognise these as signs of getting addicted.
luckily and i say this without been smug or clever i just snapped out of it, i realised how stupid i was been and ive never done it since in about 10 years , i look back and laugh about it now but i appreciate others arent so fortunate and go down a darker path with it.
now i rarely bet over a fiver , in fact my favourite thing is i pick an acca , then dont place it , when one team inevitablty loses, i feel as though i have won whatever my stake would have been

My initial response was Yes. I don't gamble, apart from the odd game of poker. Though I always thought it would increase my interest in games, but just never got round to it. I am soon retiring so will have more time, and would be interested in the thread. This board is always the 'goto' for whatever advice we need.
However, it is quite a selfish response, It having a dedicated site assisted in just one person getting into problems, then that is one too many.
I eventually voted Other, which is basically I cant make my mind up!

* More time when you retire, think again. :emoticon-0100-smile

I voted no because I don’t think the odd post about a bet is a problem but a dedicated thread could be.

I have no moral objections to gambling.

I'm going for no. It'll just get full of other stuff aswell, just like all threads. If there is to be a dedicated thread about something it should have to pass the 'sticky' test, ie would you want this thread as a sticky. I don't think a gambling thread should be a sticky.
Don't want to sound sanctimonious, I have the odd bet myself, must have spent £50 this year, and I think I'm about £20 up. <ok>

I wouldn’t look upon your poker as gambling as I don’t mine…
I’d say it was more of a contribution to Dennis’s standard of living.
