bbc budget cuts taking effect

Edit thing and slowness is driving me nuts, I started by playing guitar and bass, did some crewing and through this got to know some people at the time, worked with a couple of up and coming bands both on the road and in studio, I also went and got some business management qualifications as I wanted to try and get through into artist management, without saying too much you come up against the big boys who learnt their trade in the 60's and early 70's, they make the mafia look tame. I got out and can't say I am sorry, I still play guitar but due to an accident 11 years ago suffered severe tendon, nerve damage and the loss of a finger joint to my left hand, I only play for my own pleasure now. I love music still, along with sports and the best days are either at St James Park or late in the evening at a gig, doesn't matter if its a pub or arena as long as the music rocks and the beer is flowing. Like most industries it's who you know but I would also have an alternative path as with all artistic disciplines there are so few opportunities being chased by so many.

 

Yeah mate completely agree with the mafia comparison, you either have to play to their tune or never get anywhere in the old major record label industry as it still is as it was. I see it happening on our course as well, we have a lecturer who's produced and recorded a who's who from the 60s onwards, any big band/artist you name it and he's probably worked with them at some point - people seem to brownnose him to try and get somewhere (although to be fair his one saving grace is I found out he's a toon fan the other day !)

Since I'm now more rooted in the electronic side of things with smaller independent record labels who mainly release online (even their hard copy vinyl releases), you come across a more modern similar type from the rave culture 80s & 90s. They also tend to link labels with clubnights - I briefly put on a night in Leeds which fell flat due to pre-contracts with artists & DJs, also doesn't help when the "big" established clubnights offer the person you try to book double of whatever you offer them to not play your night and theirs instead, even if they aren't a big act - just so they wipe out the competition before it starts, which when someone costs around £1k for a few hours, it's a lot of money to front up (luckily it wasn't mine, the uni funding the first one for free after we threw a massive party in one of the blocks of their halls - think they were just happy to not have us wreck the halls with a huge party to be honest!)

As for guitar something similar to me happened, broke two of my fingers on separate ocassions (1 in Germany) and they don't do anything for a broken finger the world over, so after a while it hurts to play - kind of why my musical taste moved on from the band orientated kind of styles, still write songs on it though then use my syths and then Ableton (on the computer) to create/produce it.

And yeah definitely can agree it's who you know, it's why I'm probably going to do a diploma in Acoustics or retrain as a Design Engineer after uni - the design engineer as my dad's one, so again he has contacts!! Who knows though, a few people I'm friends with are starting to get places in the business, I've already worked with a few of them so might get a chance to advance myself through them as contacts, but it's whether I want to though, it's all a bit too much jobs for the boys sort of industry, although having worked in a few other industries already in my life, isn't that just any industry!

 

THE LICENSE FEE IS EXCELLENT VALUE.
