I don't have a problem with contributing to my own care needs when the time comes. But as I mentioned, I think it should be based on a percentage of your overall assets, not an arbitrary blanket amount that applies equally to rich and poor.

That’s the honest debate that’s never taken place, it should have been the starting point before any half arsed ‘reform’ was embarked upon.

as i've said previously i see no justification for raising NI but as you say there may be a case for a bjg rise in the upper earnings limit . Though try winning an election on the promise you will raise taxes to pay for the care of the generations that have had the best of free university education . an overarching NHS , decent occupational pensions and a generous benefit system .
I ask as for years there has been complaints about houses having charges put on them but little discussion of how the funds will be found if that doesn't happen .

My mother-in-law decided that she will leave this world the same way as entering it, with nothing. Her spending seems out of control at times, but her biggest asset is the bungalow she lives in. No matter how many times I tell her, she still thinks her home won’t be sold if she needs care!

I agree, that was my point, it needs an honest detailed debate. This shouldn’t be a political football, it needs a long term sustainable solution and the public understanding that the mythical ‘state’ paying for the lot isn’t it, should be the starting point imo.

Home office is demanding other councils urgently take in child asylum seekers, Kent can no longer cope with the numbers coming in.

Didn’t Patel tell them to do this months ago, but omitted to cover the costs? Any HS worth their salt could sort this in a morning, with a handful of calls to council leaders in other counties, as it is wrong that Kent are left literally holding the baby here, and the numbers can’t be particularly high especially if spread around. Instead she just barks via the press, she’s a wretched individual imo and stone wall ****ing useless as she apparently won’t listen to a word she’s told and it’s a matter of public record that’s she a shouty **** and aggressive. Not hard to understand why they’re all just giving her the finger tbh.

Yup, I think this is about the third time that I can remember that they've had to put out an appeal, something about mandating it now. I'll assume more are trying to make a last minute attempt to cross in the last of the remaining open weather windows into Dover and the surrounding shores. I think the weather is due to deterioate by the weekend.

They’ve made a ‘crisis’ out of **** all here. The numbers applying for asylum haven’t increased, it’s merely the method of crossing that’s changed, as there’s been less arriving by air due to COVID and via trucks from the EU and the detection rates are much better in that area, so the numbers coming via this channel have tripled yr on yr. Overall the number of asylum claims is way less that what it’s been at points in the past, when numbers were double, nearly triple this years - usually in periods when we’ve been helping dropping bombs like, but that’s another issue. All that said, just because they’re now largely making themselves known in Kent, that shouldn’t make it Kent’s problem.

For anyone who likes facts this graph shows the number of asylum applications in 12 month periods ending in June and December for the last 9 years.

Controversial i know, but i've actually thought the system before was fine where they continued to take out of yours assets (i can't remember what the limit was, 250k?) if you went into a care home.

Why should everyone be paying for the care of an older person who theoretically could be taken care of by a family member.

Yes i know, peopel will think it's unfair that they can't pass over their personal wealth through generations and generations but it's unfair some people get this headstart.

Whilst there they, shut down trusts which are a ridiculous inheritance tax avoidance scheme

although right now, that 86k cap is a joke. That's just made it so that the state has to pay more and the middle class are paying far less than they had to.

As usual it won't affect the super rich
