As posted by others, direction is more important than distance. Watch how old ladies play, they just plonk it along short distances but dead straight and get to the green in 3 or 4, they always end up with a tidy and not embarrassing score.
When you feel ready to go on a course get a coach to do 9 holes with you first.

Two very good hints there. Down the middle keeps the ball in sight, and, should it stray, an extra pair of eyes to follow the wayward trajectory. Lost balls turn, as mentioned above, a truly wonderful pastime into a an expensive hobby. Or, look on the bright side, instead of socks at Christmas, at least the family will know what to buy you.

I'm fine 150 yards in, but my driving is that erratic it often doesn't give me any chance. Interesting what you said about the rotation, I think I've struggled with it, because of the sports I played previously, where you 'hit through the ball' when I was learning them (though looking at modern techniques, some may have changed). So if I drive full tilt, it ends up going out of bounds over covers! Then compensate by having virtually no backswing. I have considered leaving woods at home and just using irons, plonking it 160 yds down the middle, but I'm not going to learn that way. Hopefully a couple of lessons will sort it.

Unless it’s the shoes, sometimes they don’t help even when you change them from that cheap 49 quid pair to the hundred quid pair.

Or a glove, don’t bother with a glove! Unless it helps. Then just use a cheap glove but sometimes they don’t help so get a good one but not a Greg Norman glove cos if he chokes then you’re going to do too! a fifty quid glove is essential really but let’s you down regularly l, you don’t need it for putting with but try it anyway cos it might help.

just wear jeans or tracky bottoms cos proper golf trousers don’t make any difference unless jeans aren’t helping then buy some cheap golf trousers and realise if tiger wears expensive trousers then you need some as they’ll improve your game unless they don’t but that’ll be the trousersfault not yours

cheap set of clubs off eBay or gumtree is all you’ll need it’s only a game mate until you realise they’re letting you down and then you’ll need to be paying 300 quid just for a fuxking driver! If Bryson needs a top driver then you do too until you realise there are other makes of top driver and it’d be best to let them achieve your potential as all the top players use different clubs and really to give yourself a chance you need to find what suits you best!

John would be mortified ....<laugh>... top man and a huge City supporter too...!!!.. he worked at the Driving range for a long time and then started a successful golf wear distribution business...

Not read all the replies so apologies if I have repeated any previous advice.

  • When playing an iron shot make sure hands are ahead of the ball (encourages a clean strike). Ball in middle of stance.
  • When playing a drive hands level with or behind the ball to encourage the strike on an upward trajectory. ball inside left heel or even further forward depending on arc of swing.
  • Den's advice is the best concentrate on hitting it straight.
  • There are some good You Tube videos with a couple of English pros who give great advice (one near Manchester, one in Devon somewhere).

If all else fails shorten the club shaft by about 50%.

It's easier to get them in the dustbin............

Always need some tools to blame for when it goes wrong.

Good advice re YouTube.... Rick Shiels golf is a good one I follow. It has a good mix of coaching/tips videos, reviews and just general golf play

Good advice there, possibly too much at once though! Remember once I was fannying about playing a shallow bunker shot, open stance, open club face, wiggle your arse a few times, all the stuff you read about. Bloke I was playing with said, 'just stand there and hit the ****er'. And he wasn't all wrong...

Not sure. You don't hit the '****er' in the sand. You hit behind the '****er'.
 
Having played golf for 50+ years I have played with some very good golfers and on some very good courses.
Best advice I could give is keep the ball in play,play to your ability and focus on course management.
Get a decent putter and a good pair of shoes.
The rest will follow.

Try to grip it fairly lightly , and try to square the club face as you go through the ball - might be harder if all the rest isn’t reasonable - but have a series of lessons if you can afford it and practice - a lot!!

Fantastic! sums up everything I know but choose to ignore - and lavish money on it!
