Happened less than a mile from where I live. Not a tory fan at all, but apparently he did a lot for the community. Not sure why anyone would now use this to castigate Muslims though; all races and religions have a load of absolute nutcases. As someone said earlier, the murderer of Jo Cox was far right.
I understand what you're saying and agree that the entire religion shouldn't be tarred with the same brush.

However, The Met police state " that the early investigation had revealed "a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism".

How many Buddhist extreme terrorist attacks occur? Christian? Hindu? Not talking historical by the way, just present day.

Oddly enough there are sects of Buddhist monks going round Myanmar murdering Muslims. Their leader goes by "Buddhist Bin Laden".

School shootings in America are often barely different from what we label Islamic terrorism. They tend to be Christians.

Islam gets a lot of bad press and some of it rightly so. But people the world over are massive areholes.

I really hope that this is not politically motivated but its hard to see what else it might have been. It comes not long after Iain Duncan Smith was assaulted and called 'Tory scum'.
As you say, I hope Raynor, and Pidcock, with her 'I could never be friends with a Tory' comments, will realise how pathetic that stance is and realise the harm they are doing to politics in this country with their infantile attitude.
If this is politically motivated, this is the perfect example of why tribalism in politics is wrong.
I live close to David Amess's Southend constituency. From what I understand, he was very well thought of locally.

I doubt there's anyone worse than the PM for infantile comments tbf.

The tone was set in the electioneering and has continued with his recent conference speech.

But this thread should be all about this poor man really.

What a world we're living in

Whenever a politician is murdered it's almost certain to go down as a terrorist attack. It's in the handbook that terrorism is an act relating to political reasons.

Thomas Mair who murdered Jo Cox was also prosecuted as a terrorist.

The Prime Minister has said some ridiculous things but, as his opponents would say, one side saying ridiculous things does not absolve the other side of saying ridiculous things.

You're right, this thread should be about David Amess, so let's concentrate on how well-liked, how good he was as an MP, and how good he was as a man.

Let's hope that no matter what the motivation for this, the loss of such thoroughly good MP, leads to greater respect for and between people who hold such positions.

Totally agree mate.

The main problems terrorists have is that their actions are idiotic and ineffective. This pointless killing makes people sympathetic, to the victim, but achieves nothing. I doubt any of us are now living in terror, not even people living on the same street tbh.

Just watched a piece on the news he was compering a music/singing event at the Royal Albert Hall for mentally disadvantaged children. From my post history you may have guessed I am not a tory supporter... but it seems this was one MP that showed there are good folk on both sides of the aisle.

In the olden days.. a commoner had the right to bring a grievance/problem to the king/lord and be heard. That obviously has long gone but the tradition of British Politicians holding surgeries around their constituencies and anyone could walk in and talk to them, is a good one. This may be lost if security for MPs is increased.

My work means I have quite a bit of involvement in PREVENT duties. The biggest threat in East London and across the UK now comes from far right extremism. We'd been told about the rise in 'incel' threats about a year ago. One of the most recent incidents was only this summer down in Plymouth - 5 people shot in the street including a 3 year old girl.

This shouldn't be about the perpetrator's race or religion though.

My wife grew up in Basildon, where he was MP for a long time. She remembers him from her childhood, being a visible presence in the town, knocking on her parents door and chatting for a long time, and being a true champion of the community he represented. He was, apparently, a very nice man and he worked hard for his constituents.

As you'll know from my posting history, I can't stand the divide that politics causes between people and hate the tribalism of politics. I would hope that the tributes being paid to David Amess would demonstrate to people that 'the other side' (no matter which side you stand on) isn't as evil as some people would want you to believe. Before anyone accuses me of trying to make political capital from a tragic event, I'm not- its just a wish for a nicer world.

It would be awful if MP's surgeries were lost because of this.

And Southend gets its city status David championed for so long. A fitting tribute in my eyes

Yet another Islamic terrorist responsible? I wonder if this one was known to authorities too?
It hasn't been confirmed that he is a terrorist, the investigation is only just beginning into that. If he has done the killing because the MP was a Tory or for domestic political reasons then his religion shouldn't come into it.

The Met last night confirmed their Counter Terrorism Command are working with officers from the Eastern Region Specialist Operations Unit (ERSOU) and Essex Police and formally declared the incident as terrorism. The force says the early investigation has revealed a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism as they raided two houses in London on Saturday morning.

I hadn't seen that <ok>

So it is a terrorist incident but everything else is under investigation... Best to wait and see what comes out of that then.

about to raid a mosque which one i don't know, suspected of teaching terrorism after hours and have imams not approved just have to wait and see hope its not Anjem Choudry's lot

i would surmise the Motiv is to instil fear in Elected MPs who are about to vote on some major changes to law to stop the dinky divers, like sending them to Albania to await process, refuse asylum to any cross channel migrants , teeth and DNA tests to find out real age, and a host of other measures announced last week
