Even though we have arguably the most intense rivalry in the UK, I think if it's likely to happen anywhere, then it would be here. We're the only set of rival clubs which share one common cause - North East football. Whilst all of the other clubs are tightly dotted together around Manchester and London, we're both up here on our own, and we often both suffer from the same bias against us from media and the pundits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011–12_Premier_League#Stadiums_and_locations Just look at us.

Newcastle and Sunderland will always share SOME common causes, especially as supporters of the rival clubs are intertwined through friends and family. It's probably what makes it one of the more respectful rivalries, minus one or two scummy bastards who take the sport too far.

Let's say, in a hypothetical situation, Sunderland AFC eventually folded, and the club ceased to exist. For us mags, let's say our club folded.

With your club vanished from existence, but the EPL continuing on as normal, do you think you could find it in you to eventually start supporting the rival team? I.e. mags support Sunderland and mackems support Newcastle? Over many years, with the rivalry eventually falling into obscurity, do you think you could find yourself changing sides purely to support a large team which still represents the North East?

PS: I don't mean immediately. It could even be as far as 10 or 20 years into the future, when the emotions of rivalry have almost completely faded away against a club which no longer existed. Could anyone find themselves edging towards the opposing camp just for the sake of representing and supporting the last major North East football team?

Through in laws and the missus would probably Huddersfield for me who would get my attendance/attention but no if that happened then football would be dead too.

Never in frozen hells chance of me supporting the mags. EVER. Rather I would be a ginger haired, 'effeminate' French farmer, with halletosis, genital warts and sexual desires of an animal sort.

I'd even make it a condition of my will that my daughter couldnt become one either, to save her any unitended humiliation of being labelled one.

SAFC would live on in my heart until I was no more.

Still, with personal guaranteed debts to Ashley for some 170m (he has loaned you this not given you it to erase accounting book debt), I reckon your lot are closer to this than ever we are. If anything happened to Agent Ashley your clubs debts would be called in at a stroke by the parent company. Now wouldnt that be a hoot.

I find it hard to believe any football 'fan' would wish that on another club, regardless of rivalry.

My father was from a generation that did support each of the local clubs. My dad before he died told me of the days when he would go to Roker park one week and St James the next.

Aye my uncle used to do that back in the 70's and 80's so it wasnt that long ago that people still did it. No real hatred until match days against each other back then. Dont think he ever had any trouble even if he said he was a mag.

Yep, my dad was the same, was this not why one team would play at home while the other played away and it has stayed the same. My dad told me he fell out with Sunderland, who were known as the bank of england at the time in the 50s or 60s I think, after they spent a fortune buying a top Newcastle striker for mega bucks. Not sure who this was. I think a lot of supporters would find it hard to do the switch especially in fierce rivalry battlegrounds like Washington were I live, Imagine the stick you'd get.

Very interesting. I didn't know that's how it once was.

My old man (77 years old) is very much a NE supporter (although he leans towards SAFC because of me) and he would go to both clubs as a kid. My dads mate (aged about 60) who used to take me to the game when I was about 14, also used to go to both back in the 50's and 60's.

I think this 'hatred' and isolationism started to come about in the late70's and 80's but was completely cemented by Sir John Halls attempt to dominate the NE sporting scene by events like buying and closing down the Durham Wasps, trying to close the Sunderland basketball team and attempting (unsuccessfully of course) to erase SAFC from the media spotlight in the ealry 90's.

I think the last 20 years has seen the biggest partizan feelings just get stronger and stronger. I'm not sure how we go back from here though as both sets of fans are hell bent on hatred.

Contrary to popular belief I dont hate them. I have many b&w friends at work and from school in Chester le Street but I do love winding uo the cybermags on these forums a lot. Lol

I prefer good old fashioned banter. Just wish we had something to fight back with but as they say, what comes around goes around.

Dont try and twist a light hearted dig into something it isnt Dave. I didnt wish anything bad to happen to Ashley so bugger off with that higher than thou bullshit before you start.

FFS.

I support the region I'm from so yes. Without a shadow of a doubt, wouldn't be as big a fan but I'd be a fan all the same.

Don't upset him Dave, he might throw a hissy fit and flounce off again, never to return..........................until a couple of days later<doh>

In between supporting the three big clubs he also followed Bishop Auckland to Wembley. He dragged my mother with him too. His favourite story is having to leave St james at half time because my 5 foot nothing mother was getting crushed every time Newcastle attacked. He talked of crowds of 60,000 regularly at both clubs back in the 50's and 60's. His love was for all things from the NE rather than one club. Now that I live in the SE I can understand that as you generate a real affection for the place and people you miss. When I go back mind it's usually freezing cold and I cannot wait to get back to the SE.

I never said you wished anything bad on Ashley. I took it as meaning you thought it'd be a hoot if a parent company stripped assets from Newcastle to the value of the loan that Ashley has given the club, thus (and I don't know the technical terms here) completely ****ing the club sideways. Forgive me for jumping to conclusions, but your track record would suggest you're not in the 'light hearted digs' game!

Nah, just laughing at you.

Oh I'm so hurt by your high brow cutting remarks. They are so good.

**** me do you sit down to piss as well?
