I think they're more like my sister at Aldi - buying whatever is there in the middle aisle because it's there. Who knows when you'll need a pair of bird-watching binoculars for £25 - even if you're visually impaired, have arthritis, and last went for walk when you missed the last bus from the Jolly Miller, and you had no power in your phone to order an Uber?
