Greetings to all Pompey and Saints fans here on not606.

Before I start, I would like to point out that I have liaised with The Saints mods, Beddytare and Channonfodder and st_brendy as well as my colleague pompeymeowth and Pompey_Fan_in_London, who have agreed to release this thread as a joint statement from the six of us.

As expected the forum has become busier since the closure of 606 by the BBC so this is meant as an informative welcome to newcomers, as well as a timely reminder for older hands.

With [thankfully] only a few exceptions the banter between our two sets of fans on here has been on a good natured and civilized level, which is testament to the decent quality of members we have on here.

However, as with any open forum, we will inevitably experience the prose of posters whose sole intention is to wind up or aggravate supporters of the other side – WUMs, as we have coined them. Now the vast majority of us get pee’d off with WUMs when they make constant attempts to rock the boat, so here are some valuable tips to deal with them.

    1. Do NOT post a reply to the thread – that’s exactly what they WANT you to do.
    2. Do NOT confront the poster in person as it is likely to end in a bun-fight
    3. DO send one or all of us a Private Message (PM) if you see content that you consider unacceptable (racist, libelous, homophobic, inciting religious hatred etc)
    4. If a particular member is really getting on your Bristols, DO go to their profile and add them to your ignore list. Their posts will no longer appear on the screen when you are logged in – as far as you are concerned they will no longer exist.

Whilst this forum does promote freedom of speech, which means that posting a WUM thread doesn’t necessarily constitute a reason for deleting said thread, I would urge all users to heed the advice above. If we all do so, then the WUMs will soon find themselves ‘talking to themselves’ as their drivel will be falling upon deaf ears (blind eyes?)

As far as moderation goes, we believe in self-moderation; these boards run in the manner the majority of users want them to run on each site, not how we think it should be. At the end of the day we are just ordinary fans, using the site for enjoyment, the same as every-one else. You will therefore find us far less conspicuous than the BBC mods and the Gestapo that appear to be modding sites such as ja606.

To avoid the risk of rambling, I’ll end there, but just finish in saying:

    Post freely
    Speak frankly
But try to avoid getting people’s backs up, as it will probably leave you with an ever depreciating audience.

    Thanks for reading <ok>

Hello, everybody. Just some timely advice from Beddy, brendy and me on joint threads which will help thing to run smoothly on the boards. It can be very good to get two sets of fans talking about things but they do often end up in a bunfight and then have to be closed. Please follow the following advice if you are going to post a thread and include another team's board.

    1. Please avoid including the General Chat board. This will almost guarantee that the Trolls will infest our board.

    2. Don't be a WUM! "Why are team X's fans so rubbish?" does not qualify as banter and the replies are as predictable as they are unwelcome.

    3. Please observe the correct protocol and post the thread on our board, and then include the other board as the additional one.

Many thanks for reading. Oh, and one final thing.

We are five points clear at the top!<laugh>

  3. Yes, I'll hold my hand up and admit I am guilty of that. Lesson has been learnt and I do apologise.

Not sure if Channon mentioned it above but...

We are five points clear at the top!

    Great advice Channon.

I'll copy it onto the Pompey board - apart from the last sentence <laugh>

There has to be room for heated banter and response to some might say " Foolish Talk"

The attendance at Fratton Park is pathetic. Perhaps they could improve if they offered a family discount for brother and sisters.... mind you a lot of people go to football to get away from the wife.

    Westham play hoof ball.

Sven will be sacked by Christmas and Leicester will finish mid table consolidating their place in the league where they belong.

Well of course there is. You can post freely on here. Just so long as you don't break the rules. That's what you meant, yes?

No not at all Channon. Rules in all walks of life are there to be pushed, bent and occasionally go beyond.
Please don't try to make this " I am in charge, Do as your told site "
You will always get people like singingblue 3, in fact there would be a few more from the blue side if they were doing better as there was back on the old BBC 606. There are so many threads, particularly on our site that a over boisterous thread with opinionated people does no harm. There is plenty of threads to read and comment on if one is not appealing.
I have very little time to spend on here, so i quickly look through and find a title that appeals to me and will comment if i wish. Freedom of choice.
Don't get me wrong, The best thing about this site compared to the old BBC 606 is that people like singingblue 3 only comment on the odd thread or usually starts his own, all the threads are not infested with wums.

But please don't close threads just because it gets a little over the top.

The trouble is like all things...it is about striking the balance with what individuals that post regularly want. What is acceptable to you or I may not be to someone else. So we have to go by what the majority wants it is they that set the standards not we the individual. Inevitably you are going to get those that agree and disagree that is what free speech is all about. If we the moderators get it wrong you out there will tell us so. Remember you as an individual make the choice of actually joining in or not joining in. We haven't closed any thread that has got a bit heated to my knowledge unless it turns personal or non football related. Also if you join on any site they will expect you to abide by what ever rules there are on the site what ever they are. It really is quite simple if you find the rules not to your liking then don't go on the site. Don't blame the people that are given the responsibility for trying to do what the majority want. We have to make judgements all the time individuals may not always like it sometimes we have to act even though we as individuals do not like what we are having to do or don't agree. That is the very nature of being a moderator. The majority calls the tune not the individual.........

This thread is really about the difference in approach which is recommended when posting a joint thread. If you take the obvious local example, there are plenty of Pompey and Saints posters who never venture onto each others boards, possibly because they not interested or sometimes because they hate the others fans. Posting a cross-board thread means that these posters are forced to read each others posts, and the thread frequently slides into a slanging match, and when that happens the thread will most likely be closed.

A little over the top? Well I would be really grateful if you have the definitive handbook which would give me a hand with that! I think most of us agree that this site is a good one because of the balance between "freedom to express yourself" and the observance of the site rules. The boundary between the two can be an interesting area!
The Mods are just posters the same as you are. We are on here because we love to talk footy with others. Closing any thread is not done lightly and it really is a last resort, almost always after a friendly reminder to cool it.

Agreed. Define " A little over the top "
I am not having a go but i have been on a couple of threads which inevitably includes Saints and Pompey fans and i have felt the closing of them was a little extreme. " In my opinion "

If someone makes a comment on a thread or about a thread and asks for it to be closed for what ever reason then yes with out doubt it should be.
I joined this board when we heard the BBC 606 was closing and there was devo and Meowth from pompey and a few Saints fans and you only have to look how it has grown, particularly with Saints fans, to Know its a great site, but all i am saying is don't press the eject button to early. I have had a few spats with some pompey fans over the past couple of years but have come to respect them more as a person and a fan by learning how passionate and loyal they are.
I don't mind some debates that get heated because i feel you get to know the person better.
Again my opinion and as a person i wouldn't be my true self unless i said so.

Well said buddy, no one is knocking you for your opinion. I have watched your heated debates before which at times have made interesting reading. You're 100% correct in your summation of the majority of the Pompey fans, there is a form of respect and a boundary that does not seem to be crossed. The banter at times is hot and shall we say "a little bit daunting" to those not used to this kind of banter. As is most genuine cross party/fan exchanges. Then you have another type of poster who considers himself to be the king of wind up merchants. Who respects no one except himself, who has no respect for other fans at all. That is the type our fans will not except and expect us to deal with them. Which we have, your point about complaints is a good one. When certain posters used to post regularly on our site, my in box would be full up inside 30 minutes. Take those posters out of the equation I am lucky to get 10 a day........and not one complaint in them. Now what would you do as a mod?
As for closing threads sometimes we do not have a choice......rarely but occasionally, I will receive a request from administration to close a certain post or thread. Usually but not always they add a genuine reason for doing so. Other times though, rarely again, they do not give me the reason. If I don't do it they will so we have no choice. Mostly though we do it after complaints.......or it is dying a death with just bun-fights and insults. All mods are instructed to do this to promote room for more up-to-date threads and discussions. Usually after a couple of days when the subject has got a bit boring and you can see it has downgraded from a few hundred posts a day to three or four and it is only bun fights.
If anyone tells you it is easy being a mod......I suggest you tell them.......Go walk in the park......BT

I think you guys are doing a great job and lets face it, our board is a very very busy one.
I would not be a mod in any way shape or form, so hat off to you guys.
If i am a honest then i much prefer to be in a changing room or training ground to have good honest different opinions confrontation but then like a mod, the final decision comes back to someone.
I find 606 a good way to spend intermission's in a up and down day probably like most people but more importantly reading so many different posts that come from people who have the same passion for a football club as i do.
Apologies for my ranting, must be the down part of the day.
