Telling a player you want rid of him before you have a guaranteed deal lined up is always a mistake, ala Conte with Diego Costa. That was a total debacle.
Did Benitez freeze him out or did the player ask to leave?
If it's the latter, then he can always say that they tried to get him his move and it didn't work.
Reintegrate him over the international break and move on.
